I'm glad to see you liked it, jye!
Personally, I loved it. It's not the best of the MCU, but it's nowhere close to the bottom, either.
Some thoughts .....
- The trailers actually don't do the movie justice, especially where Brie Larson's performance is concerned. From the very beginning, she's always being told to keep her emotions in check. I think she's meant to be a bit "wooden". Also, Carol has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, which is conveyed in this way as well. As she starts to figure out more about herself and her past, there's a noticeable change.
- The rest of the cast is great. All of the supporting cast add memorable parts to this story.
- Ben Mendelsohn completely owns every scene he's in. The performance he's able to give behind all of that makeup is truly impressive.
- The movie is funnier than I was expecting. Yeah, it's an MCU film, so there's always humor, but it worked for me.
- Even though we see glimpses of it in the trailers, when Carol fully powers up and goes "binary" ... wow.
- That cat. That ****ing cat .....
- Though the movie definitely touches on girl power, I never felt like it was overly forced or we (the audience) were beaten over the head with it. The greater message seems to stem from, no matter how many times you get knocked down or held back, always find a way to get back up and persevere. That isn't gender-specific.
- As jye mentioned, the way the story was told and how the plot unraveled was both unexpected and unconventional, especially for an MCU film. I can understand how not everyone will like that.
I have many more thoughts, but I actually saw the movie twice last night and I'm working on less than 4 hours of sleep, so I apologize for my ramblings.
