I think you raise an excellent point about gender roles in film, and perpetuating stereotypes, but I think the fundamental misunderstanding in this case, both on your part, and on theirs, is that you're mistaking "getting even" with "getting better." Is it really "progress" if you just subvert the gender roles and stereotypes and say "no, but it's okay, because it's not us." I'm not one of those "Men's Rights" douchebros, but, at its core, that kind of thinking, while feminist, is just as sexist as misogyny.

Yeah that. That's my whole point. Didn't think they'd stoop to the level of other ****** film makers. Not once did I say it was cool for it to be the reverse. Smh.

just checking in like i promised with the theater report

(I Know there are a couple of repeats, sorry, NOT my pic, but a lot of new ones that were not in the other page)

:) and, of course, here's the tasty saource: https://imgur.com/uhKcnEK

The empty theatre thing kind of shocks me. I went to an 10:30 am showing yesterday and it was roughly 75 percent full:dunno so I don't know.

I thought the movie was decent but nothing amazing. I had a good enough time. I laughed but yeah, it has some problems. By the way, Alachia's review(whom someone posted earlier), I watched that yesterday after I saw the film and I must say she has the fairest negative review I've seen so far. If you agree with what she says, I can't hate you for it but at the same time, many of her issues with it didn't bother me as much or at all so your range will vary. I'm more interested in what people think the aftercredits scene really means. Another rehashed plot element or an "out" for Sony in case they want to continue but want to bring back the old guys WITH the new girls? I won't spoil it here.

What's with the obsession with anecdotal social media posts and pics when it's all simply about numbers?:dunno:lol

This was predicted to open in the $38m (lowest end) and $55m (highest end) range and it's going to land right in the middle of that. Like I said before - it's neither a breakout hit nor a bomb.

To ask yet another OBVIOUS question of the logic challenged: if theaters were empty across the country, where did 47 million dollars come from?

Cue X-Files theme.:rotfl

Well if Gitesh Pandya posted it , it's got to be true!

The fact is the movie underperformed . it's not going to re- launch the franchise . it's already getting the boot at my local IMAX, to make way for Star Trek Beyond on Thursdays. This film will fade away and will be all but forgotten by the time Suicide Squad hits theaters.

:exactly:Went to see Infiltrator ( Good film!) last might at my local 18 theater Cineplex. It's in a college town and Saturdays are a big date night The secret life of pets was showing in multiple theaters and was sold out. My girl checked Fandango for GB seating availability for the 8:00 pm showing and there were about 30 seats sold. This was 20 mins before it's show time.

Gitesh Pandya runs box office guru, which for 20 years has been the foremost BO analysis site alongside box office mojo, and is a frequent contributor on CNN, Bloomberg etc. The movie did underperform in objective terms - it should have opened North of $60m to have been considered a hit, and it'll be about $15m below that.

But you have to remember that recent huge releases like Spielberg's "The BFG", "Alice Looking Glass," "Huntsman 2" and "Warcraft" - all with budgets like GB (and bigger) all opened to $25m and under.

The GB opening could have been - and probably should have been - much, much worse than $47m given the vitriol that has surrounded it for nearly a year. This will likely perform along the lines of the slightly bigger budgeted ($170m) original "Snow White and the Huntsman" with $400m worldwide.

lets say it does 47 mil (which it will)

then next weekend it gets a 60% drop... that would mean a 28 mil second weekend...

by the time it gets out of theaters it might not even reach 100. It needs 500 to break even, International markets can take UP to 75% of Their Box Office.
This movie might barely make 200 million world wide when it is all said and done. Blu Ray might or might not make it reach 300 mil... lets say this makes 350 million with Blu Ray sales.
in that example, that would still be 150 short of what it needed to be. even if blu ray sales brings in 200 mil more, that STILL Wont be enough.

But these are just your wishes (not based on any real knowledge or data,) not what has actually happened.

All that can be said at this point is $47m is disappointing for a major brand relaunch and for a hyped studio wide release. But nearly $50 million - from a movie that was widely reviled, and in the context of FOUR other very recent major releases opening to just HALF (or less) of this number - is ultimately not that bad.

Will it have big drops? Hard to say - Feig's and McCarthy's films are known for their "legs" but this film is unlike their previous efforts for various reasons, so will likely fall harder.

But given everything, GB could have VERY easily have opened to $23m. But it did double that number. Domestically, "BFG" is a bomb, "Alice Looking Glass" is a bomb - GB is not.

its not wishes, it is just some predictions. most movies drop 50% the second weekend, thats a normal drop. it will most likely get 24 million next week, and then it might be another 50% drop after that, Im just saying thats usually how it normally goes.

with stiff competition next week the drop for this movie might be much bigger.

You dont get it, this kind of big expensive 250 million reboot blockbuster with NO competition should have made in the area of 70-80 million dollars opening weekend.

You understand what I mean - given everything, this could have and should have opened to $23m.:dunno

well yeah, it is not a mega flop, but it might just be a regular flop :lol

$47 million is not a flop in anyone's book but yours.:lol

Making guesses and posting theater seat selfies doesn't make something true, no matter how much you want it to be (and I get that it's very important to you.) The stuff I've posted (reposted below) is based on facts and industry data. There's a difference.:dunno

PostTrak reports 60% recommend (comps: Dory: 74%, Pets: 61%)

Fandango reports GB No. 1 advance ticket seller, edging out 2nd wkd for Pets

The $40 million-plus range is fine for many movies. But for rejuvenating a franchise, and starting a new cinematic universe? That’s a flop.

"Box Office: ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Bombs With Extinction-Level $41M Weekend"

Ultimately "not that bad" doesn't cut it.!
