I have to wonder, if the the situation were reversed (say, Bale kept accidentally messing with the lighting somehow) and Hurlbut lost it and verbally gave Bale the beatdown if some folks would be as quick to defend him. Methinks no..
No, it would be different. Bale is doing a performance and needs to cocentrate during it. A DP fixing lights or somethign is not effected by an actor's performance at all, he's not the focus of attention, the actor is. They are differnt jobs that require differnt levels of concentration. The actor does his thing during the filming, the DP does his before/after.

Its like the pilot of an airplane getting distracted by the navigator while he trying to land - it wouldnt work the other way around cos the navigator couldnt realistically be distracted by the pilot.

Of course, if that were the case it wouldn't be nearly as sensational a story... but it doesn't change the point. People just don't like their heroes to be judged.

Once again :lecture:lecture:lecture Very well said.

No question about it, the DP screwed up - HOWEVER, it doesn't give someone the right to rip him a new one for 3 minutes straight over it. Bale talks about professionalism, and yet he was more UNprofessional than anyone there.

No-one deserves to be blasted like that - get upset and let them know, but don't get into a rage about it.

Funny thing is I'm sure the DP is loving how the tape got leaked now... redemption for being squashed on!!

Still love Bale though - he may be intense off camera, but he delivers when the camera is rolling.

Actually it happens all the time. Morgan Freeman admits on the Seven commentary that he repeatedly pestered athe DP while the DP was doing his job, between takes, because Freeman doesn't like to wait around.

No offense, but that is a total cop-out defense. Besides, it's not as if acting is anywhere near the most stressful job around. Any intensity is self-imposed. Even so, people are responsible for their own actions anyway. Bale is no different.

Oh man!!
This thread is hilarious!!
Some people here actually believe Bale is an "artist" and is pouring his "heart & soul" into a Sci-Fi/Action movie?...
And the MILLIONS of dollars he's "earning" give him the right to verbally abuse an apparently clueless DP...
Priceless!!
Poor Bale, booohooo....
As Anthony Hopkins said in The Edge:
"Never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane." (or in this case millions and millions of dollars)

Again though. We don't know what take it was, nor what scene it was. Imagine working take 35 in a grueling 14hr day (which isn't uncommon for films) having to do an emotionally intense scene over and over because of little fluster cucks and right when you're about to nail it, some douche, who you've already spoken to once about it, makes the same stupid mistake again. Add to that the fact that they're banking on Bale to reboot the franchise, the money they're paying him for his performance and the additional cash he'll likely take home from points and there's an extreme amount of pressure.

Was it excessive? Absolutely. Was it highly understandable? Again, absolutely. But in the end, while he might be somebody's "hero," or a multi-million dollar earning actor, he's just as human as the rest of us and has a right to lose his temper now and then. You of all people should know that. :D

Some lady (that I immensely dislike) on CNN who is just like Nancy Grace(whom I also hate with a passion) was saying that his outburst were signs of alcoholism.

They speculate wayyy too much without knowing it all.

Both those women are gossipy cows who push their big mouths in place of any intellect they might possess and should be sued straight into bankruptcy along with CNN for even allowing them to spew their diarrhea on air.

If anyone here has never lost his/her temper at one time or another - please raise your hands.

For some reason I don't think there are going to be too many hands getting raised. Geesh - is it so hard to realize that Bale like every other actor is human with faults. We all make mistakes- doesn't change how I feel about him one bit. Still an A+++++ actor and I have never seen a movie with Bale that disappointed. If he wasn't in this movie, I seriously probably would wait until it came out on dvd. Because of HIM, I'm going to see it first chance I get at the theater.
We all have bad days and as it has been pointed out numerous times he had A LOT of crap going on. I'm not condoning his behavior, I'm just saying cut him some slack. If he apologized for his behavior (which unfortunately we don't know - but I feel strongly that he probably did) then it shouldn't be the issue it has become.
I highly doubt anyone is going to leak an audio or video tape of what happened after since that wouldn't be exciting gossip fodder.

Good points.

Just because a lot of ppl lose thier tempers, doesnt make it right!
No one should be treated like this, and even though you are upset you dont need to go to those extremes. Bale made a mistake should apologize to this person.

How do you know he didn't? Hmmm? And TBH, he should apologize only for the extreme nature of his outburst. It doesn't change the fact that the DP's behavior was still disrespectful and incompetent (remember, Bale had already spoken to him about doing just the same thing).
