Good question. I trained myself thoroughly in drinking while not smoking. Being serious though I was just that committed that I didn't light one up. I made sure not to go out in drink in public. That way I didn't have to watch anyone smoke while I was drunk. Now it's not even an issue. I even hate the smell. Good luck to your friend.

I am not sure I understand the question. I smoked and quit. I continued to drink even though I smoked. It sucked and I spent plenty of nights in my truck thinking of leaving to buy cigs. I never did. I can tell you that it is very personal and that it took something most horrible to give me this will power.

You have to WANT to quit in order to do it. If you allow being around other people to weaken you into smoking then you don't REALLY want to quit.
