Yes, it would have been great to see them in that movie...Winters is also an amazing comedian....I don't know if you have ever seen this cameo...

Yeah, I've seen it but had completely forgotten about it, thanks for reminding me. What a great gag!

There's also this one...

You've done some great comedians, Jerry. Do you think you will ever go down the "Road" with Hope and Crosby?

Ok, so, for sure, I will not embark on a "rat pack" project because I only like Frank and Dino...but I threw you off a bit in answering your "road" question because this was in the works and close to completion...:)

You threw me off, that's for sure, Jerry. I bought it "Hook Line and Sinker" (That's the title of a Jerry Lewis film, by the way).

I know where you got the Hope sculpt but where did you ever find that Bing? I know it is not the work of Peter the Painter or Spencer.

Where did it ever come from? I'd like to see some clearer shots of Bing if you have the time. The sculpt from what I can tell looks just great. It really captures his large ears.

Someday, when you're done making these, just for fun you should do a photoshoot with them all interacting with each other.

You are right again! The Bing sculpt is not a Spenser or Peter the Painter sculpt...it has an interesting story behind it...I'll post more pictures of him in the coming days.

In the meantime...

Dean Martin performs at the Copa Room (1957). That’s Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Debbie Reynolds, & Jack Benny at the front table...

But there are a few more stars...can you name them?

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

I'll take a few guesses as to who they are...

The guy far right... Phil Harris
Next would be Debbie Reynolds
Then Benny
Then Lucy
I'll take a guess as to the next one... Could it be a Gabor sister?
and I have no clue who the last woman is... maybe June Allyson or Doris Day?

How did I do?

Looking forward to the story of the Bing Crosby sculpt.

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

Well, my opinion is that you get an "A" but of course that's only an opinion...:rotfl...fact is, only Harris is definitely identified...Desi is also sitting next to Lucy in profile...

I agree with you that there is a Gabor sister at the next table (Zsa Zsa?), and the last person on the far left, it thought was Barbara Stanwyck (in the original picture). In the second picture included below, she now looks like Carol Channing to me...what do you think?

Here are some higher resolution photos...it's not Barbara Stanwyck or Carol Channing!

Ok, so the story behind the Bing sculpt is that in searches I was doing on a Bing figure, I realized that there had been some figures done on the movie "White Christmas". They are rare, but you can find them out there for Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, etc. I found that they were 9 inch figures though...and then, I came across an animated Bing figure that seemed to be even rarer that was larger...

The figure was actually being sold broken, but I didn't care as it was the sculpt that I was interested in. Here he is without the hat:

I think it's a very good likeness! What do you think?

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

Yep, I think the likeness is very good but what is better than that is that the Hasbro Hope sculpt is very similar in the amount of detail and style. You also have to give Bing a pipe as a prop that will help sell the figure.

The two sculpts seem as if they were done by the same artist which is great since they will always be displayed together. I really like the pair together.

Now all you need is a 1/6th scale camel...

Wow..."Moonlight becomes you.."...I haven't heard that in years! Thanks for posting that one!!

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

I finally found the time to look through this whole thread and what a joy it was - time well spent:)
I think the laurel & Hardy figs are my favourites, especially in Beau Hunks and The Music Box. I also enjoyed the Marx Bros, always a big favourite of mine.

Any plans for a WC Fields? He really deserves to be here too.

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

Thanks Ichy! We've had some fun here on this thread...! No plans for WC Fields as of yet because I'm still trying to figure out what to do with Bing and Bob...doesn't mean you couldn't tackle him though! He would make a good subject, and with a sculpt from Peter the Painter, and clothes from the Willie Wonka figure, poof, there it is! Your thoughts?

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

I would also like to see someone try to make a Fields figure. I don't think the Wonka clothes would work, Fields was two inches shorter than Wilder and Fields was a stout guy. I also think Spencer would be a better choice as a sculptor, I still marvel at what a fantastic job he did with Stan and Ollie.

As to what to do with Bob and Bing... I would look around for a 1/6 camel which you could get from a larger scale nativity scene around Christmas time. Then you'd be off on "The Road to Morocco".

There is a 14" tall one on Ebay now for $19.00

Oh my gosh, I'm tempted to buy it! Only problem is I don't have the room to display it...! I don't think that they would both sit right on that hump anyway..thanks for the good find though!

I'm thinking more of a jungle scene (smaller, with dense jungle, with them sitting on a stump). After all, i've already got the outfits and the safari hats. Maybe like this one...

We'll see...in the meantime, here are some basic pics below...

Off on (the beginning of) the "Road to Zanzibar"...!

Boy, do those two figures work well together. And you're right about the dense jungle and having them sitting on a log, that would make a really good display. If you create the signs in this photo in your jungle dio it would look really fantastic!

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

Jim, what a great idea!! Thanks so much! Those signs will be perfect because they could cover all of the "Road" pictures!

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

You're welcome. You're right, with the signs you cover all the pictures they did together!

Re: Classic Comedians Thread - Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny & others..

Here they are...

Films in the series

Road to Singapore (1940)
Road to Zanzibar (1941)
Road to Morocco (1942)
Road to Utopia (1946)
Road to Rio (1947)
Road to Bali (1952)
The Road to Hong Kong (1962)

Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour

Each film is not simply a comedic film, but a satire of some of the popular film genres of the day, including jungle, Arabian nights, Alaskan adventure, and high seas. The final film not only comes much later, but involves a newer genre; Hong Kong spoofs the spy films of the sixties.
In 1977, an eighth Road to ... movie was planned titled Road to the Fountain of Youth; however, Crosby died that year of a heart attack.

I think I might make the sign just as it is in the picture though (leaving off Hong Kong because they we older then). What do you think? Should I keep it in or out?
