Sideshow, give this man a job! Incredible work there, DA. That is simpley breathtaking. It looks so real. You should be working with SSC.

Couldn't agree more. If Sideshow hired DA, Figuremaster Les, CustomMikey and Hurricane it would increase the greatness of their figures by about 1000%. I know it could never work because they have to mass produce figures and there isn't enough time to make them perfect like the customizing greats do, but it sure would be nice.

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Since the three of them obviously can't do the mass jobs, Sideshow should hire them to be in charge of QC in China! :lol

That would be AWESOME!!! :rock:rock:rock

I knew my days in Hong Kong would come in handy!! :lol

No seriously though guys... thank you for putting me in the same category as les, Mikey and Hurricane... I feel like a King sandwiched amongst such great artists. I'm a lucky guy.

Yep, all of them should be hired. They are the best customizer's that I have ever known of. :D

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Nice work on Aragorn's noggin! He looks 100% better, can't wait for better shots of the coat... because I know you wouldn't leave that thing looking new :lol

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Nice work! I really love that first picture, classic Aragorn pose. I also like what you did with the face re-paint. I can't wait to see some more pictures.

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Sorry for the late chime-in DA, but this is one hell of a nice Aragorn paintup! :eek :rock

And you guys are killing me! :rotfl

If we guys, Me, DA, CM & Hurricane were in one room, I think the expanded knowledge that could come out of it, might mean a whole new company! Add in Sunohc, and Toe, and some other guys, and it would be a company!
Too much for one room! Maybe it's best we are seperated by miles. Although, I have threatened to go down to Gainesville one day to meet Josh, and see his stuff in person. :D

But, I digress....:D

GREAT WORK JOSH!!!!!!!!!

And, to wax Yoda for a sec, improve beyond even what I had hoped you could do, you have! :D
(I'm only Yoda 'cause I'm older...:lol )

Get a better camera dude! Your work demands it!

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Les, I have one of Josh's pieces, and he does indeed do quality work.

It's thrilling to see what you, Josh, did with Aragorn. He looks wonderful. I agree about the beard, it certainly does change a bit. But I think going with the slightly thicker look was a wise decision, more matching with the sculpt itself. Can't wait to see some quality close-ups of your weathering.

I worry about sanding or otherwise distressing the clothing because it's bound to make it more prone to tearing or other problems down the line. I feel safer just trying to achieve the results exclusively in paint. I echo Les' sentiments about getting us into a room together. My guess is that this board is as close as we'll get to that. Sigh. Les, I don't know if you're that much older. What are you, mid-30's?

Question: Did you paint around the hair or pull it off to get at the face?

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Thanks guys! With this kind of support it's hard NOT to produce quality work...:lol

I agree with you there Les... I can't imagine if we all were together, our combined skills would be quite the formidible group. At least the two of us are close enough to one day meet up and gawk over each other's stuff! :D

And my fiance is trying to get a new camera... we probably will around wedding time... so maybe another half a year with the cheap one. I can't wait though.. it would be nice to not have to worry about blurry shots as much.

And Mikey... yeah, I echo your statement on the sanding. I realized that after a few seconds on the jacket and I think that's what stopped me. It's crazy how much that sheen still wants to stay on, no matter what you do. The rest of the outfit was easy... but that jacket was a job in and of itself.

And the hair, I didn't remove it... too scared to... I actually taped back the front strands and just held the sides out as I painted the skin tones. I then wen back and carefully did the hair inside that had been "skin toned". It was tricky... but worked in the end.

Still hammering down my skin tone issues as well.... I should be back to my old paint brand after this friday and I'll feel better about my stuff. But Aragorn turned out fantastic... couldn't be happier.

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Josh don't you ever sleep man?!?!? I know I don't but that's no excuse for you! :D

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Though not the oldest guy here...:D That may be Gruff OLD Bear...:lol Sorry Gruff! :rotfl
BUT, I ain't no spring chicken, not among you lot!... 45.

Yeah, I'd pay good money to see Josh's stuff in person. I may yet too, before too much longer.
If, one day, some mid-country set Con allows for some of us to meetup, consider it done!

As for sleep, DD! Man! I was up til 2am myself painting on my way behind work last night too! I NEVER get days off, and am still behind. Ask Pjam or Gruff (or some other members here) if patience with me is a virtue or not. I have to commend Josh and Mikey for getting it done faster than me, if indeed they do...because to do work like this, like Josh's, relatively fast, and of such good quality, is a blessing.

Anyway, just wait Josh, you get that camera, and GET YOU ONE OF THESE PHOTO TENTS (Ask Mikey!) and your workload will triple bro!
You're getting there on your skin tones. Don't let the criticisms get to you. Too red skin is sometimes a photo/lighting thing, or some other anomoly that you didn't account for.

My suggestion is to mix a nice midtone base skin, that you like, and that you KNOW photos well, then use it in mixes with the other shading colors. If you ever get YOUR color, some "perfect" skin base, and you need one for all race variations, then you can rock out your paints from a good, comfortable starting point. Just be careful about certain characters tans, or color variations.

Too often too, I see someone fall in love with a certain color paint, and use it over and over to their detriment. Stay with basics and with colors like Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and other base tones so you can always shift an "incorrect" color easily with a single repair coat, rather than a total repaint.

:stooge
We customizing few!

LOL! No, just getting up for work this morning... always check the boards before I drag myself through the door...:lol

Thanks for the tips Les... Yeah, the skin was killing me. I got used to a certain brand and ran out right in the middle of several clients repaints. I went to the store and they were out of my paint. So I had to get some stand by stuff and it was not what I was used to... It took a lot of mixing and remixing to get it right and that took a lot out of me... not to mention my time. But now I've got the hang of it again and should have my brand paint again this Friday... so crisis over.. I think.

I usually use Burnt Sienna and Warm Skin tone mixes, with a bit of light skin tone to even things out and give it more depth. And none of my figures tones match at all... At first I tried... but now the differences are fun to notice. Han might need to be lightened a bit sooner or later, he's looking a little rough compared to the newer guys...

It usually takes me about a week or two to finish a repaint, longer if I run into problems like I have lately. But most of the time it's smooth sailing...

The thing is.... I can pump out Obi-Wan's like no one's business... I've done so many now that it's second nature.

Thanks AH... Yeah, that Anakin is going to rock... I am going to be working on him seriously all weekend, I hope to at least have the base paint and the costume completed by Sunday.... It's going to RULE... :rock

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

As I said man, take your time and have some fun.

It'll be great to have DA original on my Anakin shelf!

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Love that beard on Viggo!

Just curious, what is your usual "brand" for fleshtones? I can't afford the Liquitex stuff so I generally go with Americana or Delta Ceramcoat because they are usually on sale at Michael's for .69 cents. Opinions?

Re: DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

I use primarily Model Masters Acryl.... I also use Apple Barrel acrylics as well... They have the best consistency and I like the bottle system. :D

And thanks for the comments! I did some more tweaking to him so expect awesome full on pics on Saturday!

For now... here are a few of an Anakin I did for Nash...
