I've been collecting sideshow statues on and off since 2004 and only recently have I been really getting into it. There are a ton of pieces that I really want but I have to be picky on what I order due to space restrictions in my office. When I saw the Darth Maul LSF I got that feeling of "I have to have this..."

After hours of meditation and perfecting my technique...I successfully Jedi mind-tricked my wife into giving me the "green light" to order this masterpiece.

2nd QTR 2012 can't get here fast enough.

Nice wife. Let us know what she say when she actually sees it in person. lol ;)

Even if I did plan on buying this there's no way I'd hand Sideshow $400 right before the holidays to "reserve" an open ES item that'll never sell out. I'd just wait until it was in stock and production pics were posted before pulling the trigger.

Yes given recent QC issues this marketing strategy really is a head scratcher. Still I expect they will gauge initial interest and come up with an expected total number in a few months. I think that's the best way to get fence sitters to commit.

Yeah, any art gallery will have edition sizes for paintings, sculpts, etc.

I buy one of a kind paintings and original artwork (also one of a kind, of course) pages from comic books. No editions for me, unless it is simply out of my reach. Well, there are exceptions, yes. Just saying for $2000 I can have a very nice piece of original art by a well respected artist, or even a full color original from a comic book creator I admire, personalized to me, and framed...

They have been. According to Alex, those pics are production pics.

Production samples and final product tend to vary quite a bit. Usually for the worse... don't know why that is, I assume even a production sample is a small run and there is tighter control :huh

I agree completely :exactly:

I own original art too and for this price SS is moving into a higher "art" bracket. I tend to fall into that bracket but I am not convinced SS QC is ready to handle this type of project. 2K needs to be unique, rare. Needs an artist name, needs a story. Made in China does not appeal to me.

Comparison: I buy a CS Moore bronze and I know the artist, I know the edition size, I have even toured the bronze foundry in Texas and guess what, I can shake his hand at almost any convention. That is an artist patron relationship. 2k needs a story.

I think I already said but for $2000 you could get a 1:1 Maul full-size with clothes and everything, just search RPF for some projects. That will be more unique and will look way more impressive than this 1:2 statue. There are people who indeed don't have space for everything out there. But once you get $2000 for the 1:2, I bet you can find a place for a 1:1 item.

There is also the HUGE fear for many collectors to go the fan made (unlicensed) route, which I found also on prop collecting. But people tend to ignore the fact that the creator of the custom is painting and assembling the collectible himself/herself compared to the unaware/uninterested China factory worker/painter who is just doing the job as good (or bad) as he/she can.

To give you a simple example: Palpatine 1:1 bust made by Sideshow compared to the one sculpted by Cyberman and painted by Elm Studios (also present in Gino and DarthLuumzl collections):

Good points. And in the long run, that kind of art will really appreciate. It's a slippery slope with these. I don't know the track record of SSC's 1:1's (there's only a couple, right) and I don't know the track record of HCG's 1:1 Batman's etc. And now we have the 1:2's which are basically glorified PF's that are larger. I hope the same spotty paint apps, etc. don't rear their ugly heads in these 1:2's as SSC's upped the ante for their own performance.
