Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)
I have no doubt that all the extra scenes will make it onto the blu-ray. The question is whether they're reinserted into the movie. If you've got the director publicly stating that the finished cut is the best then I tend to take them at their word. I don't think it's just him not wanting to be another whiny Josh Trank type since there are diplomatic ways to say "I like the theatrical version but if I ever get the chance I'd love to release a longer version as well." James Cameron did that with ALIENS and his wish was granted with no bad blood between him and Fox. Peter Jackson did it too and most recently Zack Snyder with BvS. But Ayers just doesn't seem to feel that way about SS.
Well the one difference is those movies (with exception of BvS) were all mega hits. Any studio would be more than happy to rake in more money by releasing a 'directors cut' edition of a proven hit. Sometimes the directors cut is better, sometimes it isn't. Case in point Alien and Alien 3. Ridley's 'director's cut' from 2003 really has only one scene added which sorta makes sense, when Parker and Ripley run after Brett and Brett's blood drips on Parker so they 'see' it or something. The whole Dallas coccooned part when she's 'last survivor mode' I thought threw the pacing of that sequence off. Ridley's theatrical cut flows better and really desn't have much taken out, which is why I slightly prefer the theatrical cut of Alien to the director's cut.
On Alien 3, most of the director's cut is good, but I didn't like them cutting out the chestburst at the end. Some say it was ok and allowed Ripley to be spared that experience, but she knew she was going to die regardless, but I think what makes that work is the way she refuses to let it go as it comes out. The Ox vs. Dog was the other main difference but overall that directors cut is better (save for the ending).
So if Ayer doesn't feel that way NOW, if the movie does decently and at least makes its production money back I'm sure WB/DC will be amenable to putting out a directors cut. I tend to agree with Crows below, he may be just playing the game now since it can go either way. I'm sure time will tell. Very few directors are EVER fully 100% happy with the cut that is released, they always wish they could tweak it somehow. Now the ones like Lucas who KEEP tweaking and changing, that gets old and I don't like 4 different versions of the movies.
i do not believe Ayer. i just dont. how many times have actors and directors and producers lied about a movie? specially right after a movie has come out
Im not even saying he is fully lying but when the longer cut comes out I can see him going "Well, the theatrical was my movie but the fans want what the fans want and you have to listen to your dedicated audience bla bla bla" lol
All i can picture
Yup I agree. Right now he's saying the correct things, playing the game. Keep the receipts going to try to offset the initial backlash. Obviously WB owns all the cut footage, so even if WB said 'Ok Dave, make the ultimate cut with your footage' and if he still then didn't want to, what's to stop WB from hiring the same editing company to comprise the 'ultimate cut' with all the extra footage. One way or another we'll see it. Whether or not it's integrated into the movie will be the other question.
