Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Lol, I was hanging with some friends and my brother; and we got to talk in about Joker.

Now, none of my friends no **** about comics or superhero. Their knowledge of Batman revolves around 30 viewings of "The Dark Knight". So they all started saying how Suicide Squad sucks and Leto sucks (I later found out that none of em has even seen the movie yet lol).

So I know I brought that up a few days ago and that just goes to prove that generally the issue with these negative reviews is people have literally no clue or credibility to say ****. It's funny because I see it on Facebook all the time. I mean I can understand that movies aren't necessarily meant to make people read comics ir books as some background knowledge. The purpose is to see it as is, and formulate interest for other series. The purpose of CBM is to get people into comics or other things, so I just couldn't understand my brother or my friends when they are saying Leto sucks when they have no clue of his acting as Joker, or literally no knowledge of the character except for Ledger. Hell they never even seen some Keaton films and call Bale the GOAT of Batman, when like Joker, have no knowledge.

Lol, it's just funny to me that people like that try and dog a film when they literally have no credibility. :lol

Pretty much. Some of the current crop of people only know of Bale Batman and Ledger Joker - they know nothing of before.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

"Suicide Squad" producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle told the Wall Street Journal they're "ecstatic" about the fan support for the movie, even if the critics haven't been as kind.

In a lengthy interview about the Warner Bros./DC slate, the producers addressed questions about the many scenes cut from the final film; Jared Leto admitted he wasn't happy there were "so many" Joker scenes cut, enough to fill their own movie.

Here's Roven's take on those cut scenes:

David Ayer shoots a tremendous amount of footage, and when it comes to things having to do with the Joker, Jared does many takes and all the takes are very, very different, and sometimes the scenes can go on for a very long time, and sometimes the scenes can be, when you're more on page, tighter, etc. Sometimes those impromptu scenes are fantastic, sometimes they're not. That's all part of the process. What you don't want to do is you don't want to limit the process."

"Fantastic" improv or not, it would be nice to see those scenes on the Blu-ray someday.

There does seem to be a trend of younger movie goers demanding one note "badasses" like Ledger Joker and rejecting any villain with even the slightest weakness or emotional depth. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, the original Terminator and ALIEN/ALIENS had those types of villains but if that's all you'll ever accept on screen then you'll never "get" why others enjoy a wider range evil characters.

There's been some underwhelming movie villains recently but with a character like the Joker you have to be open to change and adjust your personal interpretation of the character. Otherwise why bother even giving the movie a chance?...

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I'm sure a big reason for it is that there's almost an entire generation of movie watchers who didn't get to grow up with a Darth Vader, Hans Gruber, Thulsa Doom, Mola Ram, Clarence Boddicker, Rutger Hauer (any movie,) Brian Dennehy (any movie), hell even Johnny or the Sensei from The Karate Kid. All they have are Heath Ledger (and possibly Hans Landa) and I'm guessing that as a result they cling to Ledger so greatly as their ONE icon that they have a very hard time accepting anything else. *Especially* if it's someone else playing the same character.

Exactly, reinterpretation is what keeps these characters fresh, what's the point of having a character like that and not trying something fresh? that would be a huge waste. there's no definitive version of the joker and it will always be that way. Leto and Ayer get this- they respect the character.

Interesting interview with Leto talking about the idea for tattoos, and whether or not he would have a scar smile.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I get that there's no definitive Joker or Batman, and the same goes for every comic character, but people can still have a favorite interpretation and if they don't like the latest version, it doesn't mean they're wrong. Same if people like the new Joker/Harley relationship. They're not wrong, but it's not my ideal version.

Yeah, it's going to take me a long time to get used to this new...Joker.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Suicide Squad isn't the litmus test for whether or not someone can accept different interpretations of any given character. In fact I'm actually kind of surprised that so many people agree with me that it's good. :lol But to my eyes the trend I mentioned above does seem to be a real thing.

all of us will, we've only seen 15 minutes of him. he's not used in the same way as the character is in TDK. he's a wildcard in the movie, it just depends if you loved that 15 minutes or not.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Yeah right now Leto is more "ESB Boba Fett" than he is "ESB Darth Vader." Hopefully he doesn't go downhill like Fett did in Jedi and Clones.

I liked 3 of his scenes. The knife room scene, the kiss the ring scene, and the machine gun part. The pink car scene was cool, until Amanda Waller said, "Harley is crazier and more fearless than Joker"...I can't forget that :lol

Or Vader in ROTJ :monkey3

Oh and speaking of "badass" villains. To me, the scariest and probably the best villain of the 00's is Anton from No Country for Old Men. Bill the Butcher from Gangs of NY is a close second. Also, Daniel Plainview from There Will be Blood was great.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Yeah fans/general audience will always have their favourite version but should still respect the fact that there will always be reinventions of the character.

The guy sat behind me in the cinema was laughing sarcastically everytime Leto was on screen. Idiot!!!

I hadn't thought of this but I think you've got a great point.

Also there was a real social aspect to these things. We would go see ToD and talk about it based on the cinematic experience. There was an element of imagination that aded to the mythos. Now people download movies they don't like (supposedly) just to watch and re-watch scenes looking for flaws to point out. Frame-by-framing trailers to complain about the exclusion of shots. All to stay relevant in an internet conversation that's not going the way they want it to.

Good interview. Shaving the eyebrows was a good idea.

Yeah, looks like Leto Joker is the Twighlight Vampire guy 2.0. And you know what? I'm happy some folks are into that. Because it's been a couple of years now that they haven't had a character they could really get into on the big screen.

Indeed.
