Rob Liefeld Talks DEADPOOL Movie And Teases Plans For CABLE; "He's Coming..."

Talking at Comikaze, Rob Liefeld revealed that he advised Fox not to include Cable in Deadpool's solo outing (explaining why Colossus was in early drafts of the script as a second lead of sorts) and that he shared many ideas with them following the character's disastrous debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. "Following Wolverine, the Donners called me into their office and said, ‘Rob, we want to meet and talk to you about Deadpool, since we’re spinning it off. We know we made some missteps, and we want to get it right.’ So I sat there with a bunch of producers, and we sat for several hours, and we talked about different ideas. And I tried to steer them in directions I think. For instance, I’ll tell you, first question they said, ‘Rob, does Cable need to be in the Deadpool movie?’ And I said, ‘No, Deadpool deserves his own function and Cable should come in in his own movie.’ And they were like, ‘Ok, because we were thinking about…’ And I was like, ‘No, you can do them both separately. They don’t need to be in the same movie.’ Look, we had a long talk, we had some ideas, I can’t share them, some of them made it across the finish line."

There's a lot more in the video above, including Liefeld's thoughts on the writers of the Deadpool movie, what it was like to see the leaked test footage, and Fox's reaction to that ("We have computer forensics. We will find that person..."). He also singled out Ryan Reynolds as playing the character and pointed to his passion for the project as being the main reason it's finally happening. "Ryan is Deadpool. Look, Ryan Reynolds, he’s gone through that same career arc, the guy is ridiculously talented. He has a huge, huge passion for Deadpool. Deadpool’s not happening, because he was a giant star, they said, ‘Ryan, what do you want to do?’ And he said, ‘Deadpool.’ That’s why it happened. They would have no faith otherwise. That movie is because of his passion. He put together the team." As for when and if Cable will make his big screen debut in the near future, all he would say is: "Cable is awesome. And he will…when he appears on screen, we’re all going to nerdgasm, because he’s coming. They can’t hold him back. He’s coming."

Can’t wait to see a live action Cable film, but he shouldn’t get his own movie at least not for the next 10 years.

So, is Rob just talking to talk or is he actually advising on this flick?

I didn't even know the dude was around anymore.

That reads funny to me, because Liefeld makes it seem as if he's in total creative control over this movie for some reason. Interrupting the execs mid-sentence about Cable and whatnot :lol Yeah, he created these characters, but they're totally owned by Marvel. And beyond that, I think Cable is essentially what Liefeld created him to be, but if other, far superior writers didn't come along after Deadpool he would just just been another forgettable nobody character from the early 1990s. So, I'm not sure why execs would be consulting him over some funnier, better writers who handled him over the years (i.e., just about anyone else who wrote for the character).

I don't care much for either of these characters, but I totally get the popularity of Deadpool. Cable though? He's a relic of the time in which he was created--a derivative Punisher/Deathlok hybrid with over sized guns and shoulder pads and lots of pouches. Not sure I can see him connecting very well with audiences nowadays, but if Fox decides to actually invest in a movie with him over the dozens of other, better X-related characters out there then I guess we'll see.

He was a consultant for the recent Terminator 5 photo shoot.
I think he and Zach Snyder are soul mates. He should be credited as co-director of the DC Snyderverse movies just for his obvious influence.

Apparently, he's got quite a lot of input on the visual effects side of things. A recently leaked set photo showed Ryan Reynolds having his feet cast by Weta for custom made flipper prosthetics.

Ryan Reynolds' 'Deadpool' Eyes 'Silicon Valley's' T.J. Miller, 'Transporter Legacy's' Ed Skrein (Exclusive)

Fresh off three of last year’s highest-grossing movies and a hit HBO series, T.J. Miller is in early talks to join Ryan Reynolds in “Deadpool,” and so is “The Transporter Legacy” star Ed Skrein, multiple individuals familiar with the 20th Century Fox project has told TheWrap.
Representatives for 20th Century Fox and Miller had no comment, while a representative for Skrein did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
VFX veteran Tim Miller is directing from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Lauren Shuler Donner is producing the film, which will be released on Feb. 12, 2016.

Miller is a funny guy, hope he plays weasel or even Bob agent of some-comedic-name-to-get-around-not-being-able-to-say-hydra

He was the first Dedarrio (spelling?) guy in Game of Thrones. Only thing I've seen him in. Preferred him to his replacement though

Well I guess thats good news :lol

Still can’t believe we’re getting 3 films from the X-Men universe, is Fox the first studio to release 3 superhero movies in a year?

Not sure. Could be.

In the past it'd be worrying but with the quality of their X-Men movies over the last five years I'm excited as hell.

To be sure I'm still a bit nervous as it's a lot for one year but they've earned good faith at this point

Yea I’m mostly worried about the Gambit movie, I don’t know if he can work as a solo character, if his movie turns out to be a success, then Fox can pretty much make any X-Men film after that without a problem :lol

That's true. I don't know loads about Gambit so I can't think of any villains that'd be apocable or what the story will be about

Would be cool to have him as the New Orleans thief who is a Mutant but not involved with Mutant politics and who gets drawn into it some how. It a shame it comes out after Apocalypse as they coulda had Storm as his protege with her being recruited by Xavier at the end.

What's interesting is that we don't know what era he'll be in. It's more likely it'll be 80s to line up with the First Class cast but there is the option of being in the future

If it's an origin story then I'm guessing they'll have to introduce the thieves guild which could be pretty interesting.

I don't think he'll be in Apocalypse, last time he did an interview he said they were looking to do a solo movie first, then have him join the X-Men.
