Actor and martial artist Scott Adkins has a mystery role in Doctor Strange, and when The Huffington Post caught up with him recently, he weighed in on why the Sorcerer Supreme's solo outing could be Marvel's most unique release to date. "What’s great about Marvel is they don’t just make superhero movies. They make a different genre out of a different superhero film," Adkins said. "Whether it’s a thriller, a straight-up action movie or political thriller, they’re likely to choose a different genre for different heroes, and we’re gonna see some psychedelic stuff in this one. Very exciting. This is going to show that other dimension side. I'm sure [director] Scott Derrickson's going to bring some of his horror element into it as well." That makes sense considering the fact that Derrickson is known for his excellent horror work, and it's going to be interesting to see how much of that ends up factoring into Strange's journey through other realms, especially with an upcoming LEGO set teasing Shuma Gorath.
Adkins was then asked about how well some of his co-stars are handling Doctor Strange's action scenes, and if you read between the lines, it sounds like his character may end up coming to blows with Benedict Cumberbatch's. "Oh, now you’re really putting me on the spot with the screen-fighting bit. Both of them are wonderful people, and I’m not just saying that. They’re a joy to be around. Real gentlemen. Benedict is so smart so intelligent — so knowledgable about everything and just a real sweet, very nice guy. He’s not used to the fighting side of things. It’s kind of new to him. Well, I guess he did some in “Star Trek,” but it’s my thing. It’s not his thing. I was very happy to give him his — well, he tried his damnedest. And I’m sure the finished product is going to show that. And Mads Mikkelsen. He’s a great guy. He’s really down to earth … both of them are just fantastic actors."

Doctor Strange won't be Adkins' first comic book role anyway as he played Weapon XI/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As it turns out, he regrets that as much as everyone else who was involved! "I was part of the problem. I was part of the abomination of that character. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you and all your readers that it wasn’t my idea. I was doing what I was told by 20th Century Fox." That's fair enough and you can hardly blame the guy for taking on a role like that when offered the opportunity! Personally I'm not a horror movie guy (I enjoy horror comics a lot, but I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to films), but Strange does need a bit more darkness than the usual Marvel stuff. I mean, we're talking about the guy who hangs with Daimon Hellstrom, Mephisto, Shuma-Gorath and the like. He's heavily influenced by the Lovecraftian books, and it shows. He's no Hellblazer though, more akin to Hellboy and BPRD if anything.
