Review: Episode 01x02 The End of the World Aired:2 April 2005

So for Rose's first trip in the TARDIS we are taken into the future, to the end. End of the world that is. You can tell when they land at first she is excited and I think the audience shares her excitement as this is the FIRST time many viewers are seeing the Doctor Who future. The Doctor is just fantastic when he talks about the "big picture" as Rose just appears stunned especially as the Doctor says,
"This is the year 5.5/apple/26. Five billion years into your future, and this is the day.. hold on... this is the day the sun expands. Welcome to the end of the world."

The fact that its the year 5 billion comes in handy later. This also introduces the concept of the human race going into space and changing but still human. Rose accepts them semi easily, the Doctor is used to it but Ah, Lady Cassandra. The primary villian for this episode. Another interesting design, and an equally interesting villian. The dialogue is always the high point as in the section above and also the way the Doctor explains everything about the Trust and keeping the Earth as it was. The introduction gift scene is just so funny when they talk about the ostritch egg and the "iPod" with its "classic" music. Also, who is that we see.. the Face of Boe..? hmm. Also is the mention of Bad Wolf scenario between Boe and lil blue guy. Also something to remember is that Jade's scanner IDs the Doctor as Time Lord so by the Earth year 5 billion Time Lords are known of. Rose then meets a naitve of the time and starts to think "What did I do" as she talks of going off with the Doctor. Of course it isnt long until all Hell breaks loose on Platform One and that is where the fun begins. It starts when the poor girl Rose was just talking to gets "taken" by the robots. Again we get some great dialogue between Chris and Billie about who the Doctor is and it just goes great. So much in those few lines that will be teased out as the series goes on. Rose also gets her super phone, and it's touching to see her call the present from the year five billion. After this we return to the party and the Doctor goes off with Jade as Rose confronts Cassandra about being human. Following Rose's confrontation with Cassandra we get back to Jade and the Doctor. She talks to him about not believing he exsists and says shes so sorry so they also know about the Time War and that Time Lords don't (save the Doctor) exsist anymore. It's not long before things go from bad to worse, the Steward is killed and Rose is trapped with the sunfilter comming down on her. The Doctor runs back to the group where the information about the Steward is revealed to all along with the fact that the robots have infiltrated the whole of Platform One. It is here Cassandra blames the Face of Boe for their situation. The Doctor then sends their captured robot back to its owner, first the Repeating Mean then Cassandra, the real meanace. All for profit, vanity and hatred. As usual the Doctor saves the day by getting the manual control of the sheilds functioning. He then brings Cassandra back onto Platfrom One from her previous teleport escape but without the moisturizing acid she quickly dries out and goes POP. The Doctor then goes and looks for Rose who is looking at the Earth, now just dust and rocks. She laments that no one saw it go as they were all too busy saving themselves. It is here the Doctor takes her by the hand and they go back to the present where Rose sees that it the Earth is still there and we get a secret from the Doctor.

" My planet's gone. It's dead. It burned like the Earth. It's just rocks and dust, before it's time."

He goes on to mention the war, but when quizzed he simply says he's the last Time Lord, the last traveller and Rose says he has her, and says she doesn't know what she wants... but she wants chips.

This episode was one that initially gave me problems because it seemed sooo very bleak. After watching it again though I realized that it wasn't bleak so much as it was just very different and laid out some clues to the bigger picture. The alien designs were all very interesting and fun to look at. Cassandra was by far interesting, even if a tad 2-demensional. Evil for evil sake. As I said before the gold is really the "bonding" scenes between Rose and the Doctor. Suprisingly I have no major nits to pick on this episode and while it isn't one that I am prone to watching over and over it is a SOLID story from start to finish.

Script: 7.5/10 Inventive and different but a little rough in some areas
Acting: 7/10 A little harsh maybe, Billie and Chris were fine but Zoe as .....................Cassandra seemed a tad over the top.
Design: 8/10 The aliens were fantastic, the Face of Boe especially. As a trip ....................to the year five billion I was very pleased.

Overall: 7.5/10

Rose:7.8
EotW: 7.5

Freckin awesome new episode, you just cant beat the Doctor vs the Daleks.
Did not ever think the Dalek would do that to themselves and it was my favorite Dalek. The black one

I hope the end is not the face of future Daleks

My G/F said the same thing, she wasn't impressed with the human/Dalek at the end of the episode.

Personally I thought the episode was great and it was easily the best of the series so far, but then the two parters have always been a little bit better. I doubt the BBC will ever replace the classic Dalek design with the human Daleks, I think after the second part of this story that'll be it for the human Daleks.

I also loved the fact this was the first episode where they didn't mention Rose directly, don't get me wrong I loved Billie Piper's character, but it's time to move on with the series and the fans have to get used to Martha now (who I also think is great btw) so they can't keep going back to Rose all the time.

yea, I wasn't too impressed with the human dalek. I hope at least one survives in the metal box. But I will agree that the episode was great. The director of the episode also directed the impossible planet/the satan pit, so I'm really looking forward to the second part of the episode. PLUS, Tallulah, hubba hubba, we liked her.

I'm stuck at work tonight so I haven't seen the second part to Daleks In Manhatten yet even though it aired over an hour ago:monkey2.

My G/F assures me she's set the video though, so as soon as I finish at 11, I've got a late night Dalek fest to go back to:D.

Hope they don't kill Dalek Sec since I think the black Dalek is kinda cool, but I've got a real bad feeling he's gonna be toast.

... WOW. Story redeemed itself, but then again I never thought it to be bad. I just want a scene where the Doctor tells Martha they will not ever be a couple as it seems that the Doctor just can't have a companion that doesn't want him in a lovie dovey way(aside from Jack).

You sure about that Memnoch:lol

Anyway I really enjoyed yesterday's episode when I got home to watch it, it didn't develop quite how I expected it to. I thought it was interesting they did something a little different with the Daleks this time around and of course one of them had to escape.

I wonder where they're gonna turn up next time, RTD is gonna have to let the Daleks win a couple of battles since there's only Dalek Kahn left now, one more battle and that'll be the Daleks wiped out forever, though I doubt he'll let that happen.

I'm enjoying Martha's relationship with the Doctor and I think she's a great character, I just think they should now start to move away from the Rose stuff. She was mentioned again this week although not by name and it does start to grate after a while.

I'm not saying by any means the Doctor and Martha should fall in love, but I just think the series needs to move past Rose now.

Great episode on Saturday, i thought the human/dalek Sec kicked ass i was well disapointed that hes gone. Hope they make a 12inch figure of him.
Ang the blew up thw deleks 70's style. exploded with the dalek blasted to pieces. Dalek tommygun was cool also.
Wonder if Kahn (KAHN!) will be back in this season or the next, maybe the christmas speacial.

I dunno... I kinda like the idea that Caan (yes that's the right way I believe) was so wiped he shifted above the atmosphere... and crashed down and was found by a certain rich man in Utah. :lol

But yea, it was a fun story. I liked it, but next weeks looks like we are going to see that lilttle rift that forms between the Doctor and Martha.

HAHA, that would actually be pretty funny.

I like the episode. Next week's episode with Martha's Family should be interesting.

I think it's the start of a big plotline, RTD has been hinting that Martha's family will have a more important role to play as the series goes on.

And Ian1138, I bet we do get a 12" Human Dalek Sec from character as they are planning to release more aliens this year.

From what I've heard we've been guaranteed a 6" version from Character Options in any case, so the figure's coming.

I wanted the Doctor to fall to his knees and scream Khan!!! Then cut to an exterior of the Empire States Building and we can still hear him scream KHAN!!! Then cut to the Earth from space and we still hear KHAN!!!

Not only that but Elton came off more as a caricature than anything else. And we won't even speak about the BJ joke with him and Ursual. That had absolutely no place in Who. Let's keep the sexual inuendos at "dancing" and call it a day.

The Brits kicked the puritans out just so they wouldn't have to water their inuendos down. No need to project our own sexual hangups on them. And no use with RTD at the helm.

Hey Im all for openness with sexual topics but they really don't have any place in a show like Doctor Who, but that's just me.

I agree that the crappy innuendos are really starting to grate and for me the constant references to other pop culture stuff such as the cringe inducing Harry Potter bit in The Shakespeare Code are just as bad. But my biggest beef with the show at present is the lack of alien planets. The Doctor is supposed to travel in time and SPACE yet since the show returned in 2005 it seems like the Tardis has difficulty escaping Earth's orbit, yet the older series went all over the galaxy. Granted most of the exterior shots of the planets looked like they were filmed in the same quarry with a load of smoke machines going full blast but you at least got the basic impression they were somewhere other than Earth.

I guess New Earth kinda counts as another planet, since it was set up after the original Earth was destroyed, but I know what you mean.

Fact is one of the very best episodes of the series so far was set on another planet (Impossible Planet/Satan Pit)

So maybe they should focus on other worlds a bit, RTD has said they'll go to another planet before the season is through.

From what I remember, in Season/Series 1, RTD said that he wanted to keep the doctor on Earth to not confuse the newer generation of fans, which is understandable. But now that they are in Season/Series 3, I don't see that logic still fitting into Who. Maybe for the sake of Martha they are staying on Earth, or maybe for the sake of the budget, I don't know. But if any off-world episodes give us the Satan Pit/Impossible Planet I'm down for it. If we are goign to get a really crappy Love & Monsters off-world planet type episode, they can use Earth.
