Wow, you just really didn't like Love & Monsters, did you?
It's actually one of my favorites. It reminded me of the 3rd Season Buffy where we follow Xander around and never really get involved with Buffy (even though she saves the world in that episode [again]).
I like that the new Who has a wide variety of narratives. On one end there are the Love & Monsters and Father's Day type stories that are more personal and go against the typical story paradyne and on the other end we have the Satan Pit and Daleks In Manhattan type stories that embrace the escapist, boys fiction aspect of the show. In the middle are probably the best ones such as The Christmas Bride and Girl in the Fireplace.
Though what really makes Girl in the Fireplace and Empty Child/Doctor Dances so good is the writing that the Coupling creater did. Makes me wish the thought police in Utah hadn't blocked the airing of Coupling when it was launched on NBC. We need more Steven Moffat on TV.
