I also think with Prog its not the issues that are pressed so much as the condescension he feels from the writers to the viewers. Maybe I am getting that wrong. :dunno

Thats it exactly Pix. I'm old enough and I hope smart enough to not need a television show to try to convince me of whats acceptable or what have you.

IMO, anyone that is so maleable on these social issues because "Doctor Who said so" scares me to bits regardless of whether I support that particular cause or not.

I was watching Torchwood: Children of Earth with my kids and I forgot about the Jack/Ianto kiss before Jack blows up... my kids saw that and their jaws literally hit the floor. My oldest said "why is jack kissing a boy?" and I said "I dunno. I guess he must love him." That made sense to him and he didn't mention it again. :lol

Have there been any gay references or characters on the show where you felt they weren't trying to make it an issue? I ask because I actually agree with you re: Captain Jack but I'm trying to get a sense of whether things like Sky and the lesbians come across as part of an agenda to you or whether they come across as characters who just happen to be gay.
I'm sorry I can't remember the characters you mention. If they didn't make a negative impact to me I guess that means that I accepted them as believable and not pandering characters, but I don't have a problem with a character that "just happens to be gay" its usually when its "hey I'm a gay character because we needed a gay character to prove a point" that I start getting upset.

I don't think it works that way. It's more sort of background radiation. The kids who grow up seeing this stuff are going to be far less likely to wind up voting for Prop 8 scenarios 15 years from now (that's probably the root of many of the objections). And perhaps much more importantly, the gay kids in the audience are going to see themselves on TV.

I've got the series four soundtrack on and A Dazzling End came on just as I got here. Group hug!

My nephew asked about Jack kissing the Doctor way back in the first season and just accepted being told some boys like girls and some boys like boys. Homophobia is learned behavior.

Me too.

Guess Im in the minority here but Ive never had an issue with Jack or felt Who or Torchwood were pushing an agenda. And Barb, one thing you said I totally agree with, is that many gay and lesbian sci fi fans feel it very nice to see themselves represented for once.

My issue with Jack is largely that John Barrowman is a terrible actor. It's only secondarily that the character doesn't seem to be anything more than a cardboard vehicle for flirtatious quips. :)

Thats true and its exactly why its being done. The writers know what they're doing. Not saying right or wrong, but they know what they're doing and when the savvy audience knows what they're doing thats when it starts getting distracting.

I guess mileages vary. The very same arguments flared up back when black characters were added to shows - especially when those characters stopped being mouthpieces for black "issues" and became characters who just happened to be black (that's when it gets really ... subversive). I don't think anybody today would even attempt to make the argument it shouldn't have happened. It's right to see gay characters on TV. When I see the old lesbians in Gridlock I notice - and applaud. I can't wait until that sort of thing truly doesn't stand out. Hooray for Kirk and Uhura.

see I think society is already there. even as late as the 60s it might have been necessary, but I don't think society is remotely stuck in the dark ages anymore where it is necessary to do that. definately, milages vary. personally I see it more as an insult to my intelligence anymore.

Then where are all the non-stereotyped gay characters on TV and why won't the GAY AGENDA!!!1! posts die? We're not there at all. Prop 8 proves that even if we don't want to fret about character counts and Internet posts.

I still want to see Matt wear a long coat and scarff, just once. I bet it looks really good with the outfit he has now.

I was just watching Journey's End and I got to thinking... When The Doctor heals himself, does that count as a regeneration? Previously, in the classic series, it was mentioned that a Time Lord can regenerate 12 times. Did Journey's End count against that 12?

I'm guessing the answer is that the current writers will ignore that plot point...
