Alot of the things you guys are talking about over my head cause I'm a newb.

BTW: My wife and I watched the Green Death a few nights ago which was our first of that Doctor. It was really well done. The actor was very good and much more athletic and physical even in his old age than Tom Baker. The sets were a lot better than the Baker ones as well.

One of my faves. I always point to this one when people say the Doctor never had romantic feelings for a companion. To my viewing he obviously had feelings for Jo and when she leaves with that hippie at the end you Pertwee really made you feel sorry for the Doctor. :monkey2

Yeah. I definately felt sorry, more so in a daughter leaving home sense than a romantic sense, but I only had that one dvd to judge by.

I just want the specials to be gone.

I edited this a bit to reflect my opinion. 2010 is a long time to wait for another chance at trying to find some redeeming qualities in the revived series again but I can always start on some of the other Classic stories that I haven't seen on DVD though based on the clips I've seen I'm not sure I want to bother with Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy.

Sylvester McCoy is a brilliant Doctor. You can't go wrong with the stories that are already out on DVD ... although if you dislike the new series chances are you'll dislike those too.

They dealt with race when it came up, as the with Martha getting treated as a 2nd class citizen in the early 1900s. But I'd imagine the doctor would just ignore race completely and it would be a non-issue for him no matter what the historical time frame.

It's a new and different direction - I can't really see people having a problem with it - race has never been an issue with the Doctor. it's no where near as drastic as would be making him female - (which I'd love to see).

Speaking of which - I saw Alex Kingston at the movies - she was taking her daughter(s?) to either Bolt or Twilight - not sure which.

I agree. Its a shame that by his time the BBC spent very little on his stories and as a result the post production is pretty crappy (sound quality is the worst but story editing really suffered in McCoy's era). :(

Sylvester McCoy had real quality potential.

I was furious when they cast her as River Song because I've wanted her to play the Doctor ever since I saw her performance Moll Flanders.

Well taking into account they considered Marc Warner and have a habit of bringing in actors that have played other parts before.. could be interesting. But no, honestly I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Jennifer Saunders tackle it.

I'd sooner have the show run by RTD with David Tennant as the Doctor for the next 30-40 years than see a female in the role.

My take on this is that he's an alien.. his skin/appearance just happens to look like that of a causasian male... so as far as I'm concerned he can be black, white, purple, a woman, a midget.... anything

If they're gonna change him (and I love DT in the role) then lets REALLY change it. No more pretty young boy acting manic going on... lets have a woman or a black fella or somethng... but DIFFERENT whatever it is.

and... whilst he may have been a bit un-diplomatic with some of his posts, I agreed with almost everything barbelith was saying about the black issue and people's reactions to it.

Why? The Doctor's character changes with each regeneration, but sex has never really played into his strengths or weaknesses. I think it would be an interesting way to take the character.

the doctor is an alien and can be whatever it becomes......... it's not been said anywhere that he can't be female. I thnk it would make for some interesting character plays

I'd love to see a female Doctor, however iirc, a Timelord not only designates species, but gender as well. Wasn't Romana a "Time Lady" or "Lady of Time" or something like that?

He always has a female companion it would feel wierd with a female Dr. and Im a girl saying this. Im all for Ladys roles in movies and tv but it just seems like a male role to me. The comedy David pulls off would be strange coming out of a girl although I really liked Donna. I didn't like how they ended that with her she was a great comedy play off the Dr.

I can't recall if that was a fan label or not. But it doesn't really matter; you just say Time Lords switch titles as warranted. We already know Time Lords can change color and even species when regenerating. Gender should be simple enough to explain away. I'm all for it. There are some actresses who would make amazing Doctors (people like Tilda Swinton and Alex Kingston for starters).

As for Paterson Joseph - I was previously cold because I've only ever seen him overact, but two episodes into Survivors I've completely changed my mind. I think he'd be a brilliant choice for a new kind of Doctor.

No, this has to stop. The Doctor should never be regenerated into a female. Why? Remember that the Doctor has a granddaughter, so Timelords do procreate. Wouldn't having your father or grandfather suddenly turn into a woman kind of screw you up as a child? What about that Timelord's spouse, or any other kinds of romantic relationships that person has had?

No, if they want to do a series featuring a Timelady, then do a spin-off with Romana and leave the Doctor alone. Enough's enough already.

Well considering some fans don't accept Susan as his real granddaughter as she had a last name, and others that refuse to believe the Doctor HAS romantic relations with any species, I'd say gender doesn't really matter.

It's just getting weird. Why try to change the show sooo much. it's already working so well the way it is. Fans have already accepted the whole regen. thing and having to get used to that I don't know if the fan base would follow the whole gender transfer thing its just tooo out there.
