can anyone recommend the top 10 episodes pre Eccleston to watch? I've seen some from the first 4 Doctors, and some are good, and some are just terrible! Thanks.

I'm not gonna give you 10, but watch Genesis of the Daleks...

Great episode, probably the greatest...in my humble opinion...

Thank you kind sir! How does "City of Death" rank? I hear that's a really good one as well.

I was really let down by City of Death. :monkey2

My fave classic episode is The Pirate Planet. And if you like Douglas Adams, this story (written by Douglas Adams) is far more Douglas Adams-y than City of Death, imo.

Other great stories that should not be missed:

- Earthshock
- The Time Meddler
- The Tomb of the Cybermen

Honorable Mentions:

- The Five Doctors
- The Dalek Invasion of Earth
- Robot
- Robots of Death

Regarding the Easter episode, a friend of mine pointed something out to me that I feel like an idiot for missing (and apologies if this has been mentioned here already): Waters of Mars = Master of War  :horror

yeah bcm77, I think you have a great list too.

Thanks dude, yours is pretty good too, I've not seen the first 2 or last 3 of your list yet but The War Games is out on DVD soon and Caves of Androzani is one I keep meaning to get round to as I've heard it's one of Davison's best if not THE best story of his run.

Of my own list I wish the BBC would hurry up and release The Daemons on DVD as the commentary was recorded several years ago. I've only seen the story once on Youtube and the picture and sound quality wasn't very good.

Pix,
Have you ever seen the documentary Return To Devil's End that featured several of the cast from The Daemons plus the director going back to the village where it was filmed and revisiting the various locations?

If not check it out as it's really intresting and I expect it's a cert for one of the DVD extras. It was made a year or so before Jon Pertwee passed away and it's great hearing his comments as well as seeing him joking around with the UNIT regulars.

Androzani is, hands down, my favorite Davison story.. though I forgot to mention Black Orchid too. But the drama in Androzani along with the acting is just intense PLUS a regeneration to boot! :rock

I have never even heard about that documentary about the daemons. Pertwee was such a magnetic guy I can imagine it was fun watching. Where did you see it?

It's definitely a contender. I think Kinda is his finest story but Caves is a very close second.

Return To Devil's End ... I expect it's a cert for one of the DVD extras.

Return to Devil's End isn't owned by the BBC. It seems a natural fit for the DVD but the rights owner probably won't license it.

Intresting, maybe that's one of the reasons for the delay of the DVD release?
The Beeb will surely want it as the main feature of the Daemons extras and whoever owns the rights will inevitably be holding out for as much cash as possible.

Pix,
I watched it on Youtube a couple of weeks ago so unless it's had to be taken down since then it should still be there.

Thanks guys for the insights on the Davison episodes. I've got the following of his on DVD so far,

Castrovalva
Black Orchid
The Visitation
Earthshock
The Five Doctors
Resurrection of the Daleks
Warriors of the Deep

Of those Earthshock is by far the one I rewatch the most and Warriors of the Deep is always good for a laugh at the Myrka!

My list was pretty good too... right? :monkey2

I can't understand why people hated Adric. He is actually one of my all time faves. :dunno

From what I've seen he was decent enough and his departure in Earthshock is still one of the best in the show's history, the sort of event that made the good guys seem vulnerable which is so badly lacking in today's Who.

Nowadays he'd "die" in the crash only to wake up a few hours later and spend the next episode sitting on a roof whinging.

Kabukiman,
Your list is good too!

I totally agree that the Pirate Planet is one TB's best (and realldy does feel like Douglas Adams). Really that whole season is great. I like Power of Kroll too. FAbulous list Kabuki. :D

I need to watch Time Meddler again. I really loved that story too.
