I think there are exceptions where a fairly boring looking character is still awesome as a figure, because it is so iconic--like Vito Corleone, any given Humphrey Bogart, or Rhett Butler. But Day-Lewis Plainview is not that.

Since it's impractical in the extreme to collect representations of every great character from every great film ever made, I personally think it best to collect only those that are visually exciting, unique and iconic.

Exactly, Daniel Planeview maybe one of the greatest performances ever, but nothing about his look is inconic or memorable like your Indiana Jones. I would still like to see him done but not at a Rainman price point.

Almost all of my figures are in suits or some form of boring clothing now and after having aliens , monsters , marines , robots and whatever else they're the only ones I've kept.
All of my favorite movies consist of somewhat " boring " looking characters in comparison to most figures of things you'll see on this forum.

It could be dressed in a suit or a clown costume it wouldn't matter to me as long as I can glance at a figure and have a character standing in front of me from a movie I love and can think back to by looking at it , that's what makes me happy and a part of this hobby.

I'd personally buy a Rainman Daniel Plainview without question. Love the movie and I actually think as a figure it would be more visually interesting than a lot of other Rainman figures personally.

A characters outfit may be boring, but that does'nt make the character boring. I don't like or dislike a character in a film because of their outfit so that doesn't carry over into my collecting habits either and I'd rather have a figure with boring clothes of a character I really love as opposed to a character that is just alright but has on a pimp suit.

Gotta be a compromise between the two for me. Miller's Crossing is one of my favorite movies ever. But I wouldn't buy Albert Finney and Gabriel Byrne wearing boring-ass suits. On the other hand, I wouldn't buy a Hot Toys Terminator: Salvation figure if they cost $20. Even if it is some super-Terminator robot with light-up eyes, removable fake skin, and a big-ass mini-gun.

To bring this back on track a bit--the Dude is the perfect middle ground, because he is awesome and looks awesome.

Performance aside what it comes down to is he isn't going to get up and act, your buying something to look at. I'd rather be visually intrigued and wowed everytime I glimpse my Iron Man Mk.4 instead of thinking, "hes a good actor."

We'll just all have to disagree. I look at my collection and I'm reminded of the films and perfomances I love, even the ones that do fall into both categories I've never looked at them to be reminded of how cool their outfits are.

I fall somewhere between the two schools of collecting thought I suppose, but I would bash a Don Draper in a heartbeat if I had the perfect headsculpt and suit, so that has me leaning more to one side.

Price also plays a big factor as I said, for Planeview I'd happily pay a Hot Toys price and feel ok about it as I did with Vito Corleone who I ultimately sold.

But for $800 Rainman prices, it needs to have both, the incredible performance, and the iconic pop culture relevance look.

Planeview that is not, but the Dude on the other hand...

And thanks for the Miller's Crossing mention. It is indeed a great, great film and, yes, figures of those characters would be boring. Also, the Terminator: Salvation slam was 100% on target. :lol

I suppose it depends on what's visually appealing to you as well. For me all of the early 1900s outfits Plainview wears are vastly more intersting to look at than a sweater and some zubaz pants IMO.

I must say I have to agree with all of this. Everyone has made strong, good points here, but the fact of the matter is we buy these things to look at them. A visual medium needs a visually striking character more so than a great acted character.

I think that a figure must have a unique item or outfit in order to appeal to me.

But that's not to say that I wouldn't buy a Plainview. Just not a Rainman Plainview. Kind of like Stansfield...nothing unique about him, nothing which stands out visually. Acted well? Yes. Visually appealing? Not really.

Whilst I like have visually appealing characters on my shelf, the only important factor to me is 'do I love the character enough.'

Perfect example: Stansfield.
Is he just a guy in a suit? Yes.
Would most people find that boring in their collection? Yes.
Do I love the character and it is my fave fig bar none? Yes.

Yeah that is exactly where I fall on it completely

:exactly: for me it's the emotional connection with the story/character/performance that drives me to invest in and/or build a figure.
