I think there are exceptions where a fairly boring looking character is still awesome as a figure, because it is so iconic--like Vito Corleone, any given Humphrey Bogart, or Rhett Butler. But Day-Lewis Plainview is not that.
Since it's impractical in the extreme to collect representations of every great character from every great film ever made, I personally think it best to collect only those that are visually exciting, unique and iconic.
To bring this back on track a bit--the Dude is the perfect middle ground, because he is awesome and looks awesome.
Gotta be a compromise between the two for me. Miller's Crossing is one of my favorite movies ever. But I wouldn't buy Albert Finney and Gabriel Byrne wearing boring-ass suits. On the other hand, I wouldn't buy a Hot Toys Terminator: Salvation figure if they cost $20. Even if it is some super-Terminator robot with light-up eyes, removable fake skin, and a big-ass mini-gun.
Performance aside what it comes down to is he isn't going to get up and act, your buying something to look at. I'd rather be visually intrigued and wowed everytime I glimpse my Iron Man Mk.4 instead of thinking, "hes a good actor."
We'll just all have to disagree. I look at my collection and I'm reminded of the films and perfomances I love, even the ones that do fall into both categories I've never looked at them to be reminded of how cool their outfits are.
