Dune has exceeded expectations with a strong $40.1 million opening at the U.S. box office, despite debuting in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service at the same time. This gives the movie the best domestic opening of any dual theatrical/streaming Warner Bros. release to date, besting Godzilla vs. Kong ($31.7 million).

Earlier estimates indicated a $30M-$35M opening for Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi adaptation, so Warner Bros./Legendary should be pleased with this result. It remains to be seen if Dune has staying power, of course, but the movie has been performing very well overseas up to this point (it premiered last month in several locations) and has now passed the $200 million mark globally.

Hopefully it does well.

Didn't realise I needed a Part 2 until last night. :lol

I kind of see a connection between the "vibro" technology -- the shields and the 'dragonfly' wings -- but I was always confused by the spice/mind expansion/space travel concept.

Happy if it does well, the sequel is needed; kinda sux tho these comparisons are even being made. Since it's not normal times, IMO you can't really talk about box office compared to pre-Covid. Not really valid IMO.

Normally for something like this, I would have been planted at an upscale theater opening weekend.

I want to know how the spice allows huge ships to travel through space and how those pickled Navigators work.
Spice consumption evolved the Guild Navigators to have the proper prescience to navigate the universe and they don't share such knowledge with anyone outside the Guild, including the Emperor. Therefore all space travel between systems and galaxies must go through them.

No. I understand that's how the PT Jedi do it.

I thought they used the spice as fuel by making the ships move faster. I'm so simple minded.

I saw a clip of the navigators from the old film. I didn't know they were responsible for the interstellar travel. Maybe their mind's are so advanced they can "navigate" or instruct the ship through interstellar travel which might be difficult for a human pilot to do. So basically, spice make ship go brum brum through time and space or whatever, and the floating pickle just gives the pilot directions or something.

Sounds like lazy writing to me.

Maybe those "Navigators" are just lame magicians and don't want people to learn their simple trick.

That part I remember... but its the 'how' that I never understood. Is it made more clear in the book or is it just left to the imagination?

Agreed. It actually serves to cheapen and dilute the reality of violence.

I noticed that as I was watching. Still thinking about that. I remember one specific Fremen in the book being described as having sandy brown or blonde hair, but I'm not sure if Herbert described them *all* as caucasian, I need to re-read it.
When I said all white I was referring mostly to the Lynch film since their skin color isn't fully spelled out in the book. Race wasn't really called out for anyone in the novel to my recollection, though Liet Kynes (played by Max Von Sydow in the original film) was described as being blonde.

Mostly left to the imagination. The book just said they had evolved leaving the door open for Lynch to make giant floating Jabba the Hutt fetuses and whatever else you want to picture, lol.

There are two Guild representatives present for Paul's duel with Feyd at the end but the book just describes them as pudgy humans.
