I think an announcement will come tomorrow. From a PR standpoint Warner Bros. will want to brag about the #1 box office numbers then top it off with a formal announcement of Pt2. That, coupled with word of mouth and positive reviews will likely carry the momentum to a 2nd week win. They'll probably tout any positive HBO Max streaming numbers separately later in the week.

I wonder if Warner allowed Villeneuve to shoot some of the principal photography for Pt2 while shooting Pt1. Assuming the script was complete or near complete it wouldn't make financial sense to release actors, dismantle sets and leave locations that were going to be needed a year or two later. Of course they could shock everyone and say most of the movie was shot back to back and Pt2 will come out in a year or 18 months.

Mostly left to the imagination. The book just said they had evolved leaving the door open for Lynch to make giant floating Jabba the Hutt fetuses and whatever else you want to picture, lol.

There are two Guild representatives present for Paul's duel with Feyd at the end but the book just describes them as pudgy humans.

OK, thanks. I read the book a long, long time ago and really don't remember much of the details as the Lynch Dune became the visuals in my head, plus years of dilution by Star Wars and so many other sci-fi films.

I've been watching a lot of interviews with Villeneuve about the film.

He hasn't shot a frame for part 2, all they have is a treatment done.
I've seen a couple of interviews as well, although I don't recall him saying they only have a treatment. However, because Warner Bros. didn't want to commit to Pt2 until they saw how Pt1 did, I don't think they would allow him to say anything has been shot for fear it would turn into another Snyder Cut movement. It's mostly wishful thinking on my part since it would be at least 2 years (likely 3) before Pt2 comes out.

Well as I'm continuing to think about this film the next day I can't help but feel that there was a missed opportunity in ending this film in a more satisfying manner. Peter Jackson did a great job of elevating Lurtz in order to give FOTR a climax with some real oomph and I think that Villeneuve should have done the same. Imagine if after they met Lady Galadriel they just walked to the canoes and then bam, done.
Agreed. Especially since...

...Stilgar has already agreed to let Paul and Jessica come with them. The only reason we get a final battle at all is because Jamis issues a challenge and Paul accepts. I haven't read the books yet, but the way it's presented in the film, that particular conflict could easily have not happened, which robs it of its impact. Additionally, Paul killing for the first time after deciding to believe his own publicity should be a pretty big moment, yet it's passed over so quickly. It's the only part of the movie where I feel they should've taken more time.

Having that said, I'm sure I wouldn't mind as much if the movie just continued from there. Which, technically, it will.

What? That blows it's like half a story:pfft:

Haven't been a fan of WB management.:cuss

The writer Jon Spaihts said he has a treatment done.

Villeneuve has been asked if he shot anything with the intent of using it in Part 2 and he said he hasn't.

The impact was supposed to be the realization of the Fremen that Paul isn't just a child with the potential to one day be a competent warrior (as Stilgar initially assumed) but rather *already* someone capable of besting one of their most seasoned warriors which immediately causes them all to see him in a very different light. But yes I agree that the film glossed over that quite quickly.

In the book they stripped down to their underwear for the duel so that the victor didn't emerge with a ruptured stillsuit.

It'll be interesting to see how well Part 2 syncs up with Paul's future visions then since some of those are supposed to be accurate. I wonder if we might get a five hour "single film edition" one day, assuming Part 2 gets made. This is WB who gave us a four hour superhero movie so who knows.

I wouldn't mind extended cuts for the Blu-Ray. I'll have more patience for those than for LOTR's, that's for sure. Can't imagine them being quite as long, even with Villeneuve at the helm.

No. I understand that's how the PT Jedi do it.

I want to know how the spice allows huge ships to travel through space and how those pickled Navigators work.
The Navigators in the novels are described as deviated in terms of physical evolution, but Lynch took it to the extreme if I recall.

I believe the Spice allows Navigators to work within exotic Space-Time -- the Holtzmann engines fold space but given how weird reality subsequently gets it then requires limited prescience to navigate safely.

Travellin' through hyperspace ain't like dustin' crops ...

Sounds like lazy writing to me.
I definitely disagree. I find it pretty ingenious that by Herbert giving the Space Guild members the ability to see across the universe and even slightly into various threads of the future they become much bigger factors of the story than mere public transportation. Because of course any mega-organization with such abilities won't use them *just* for the benefit of helping people get where they want to go but rather to also chart their own course for greater wealth and power.

Their ability to see how Paul can muck things up for them makes them major political and even military players. The ending is such a clusterf*** of various powers coming to a head at Arrakis that I sincerely hope we can see Villeneuve's take on screen one day.

And that's the benefit of adapting novels like Dune or LOTR. They're works that the authors spent years in advance plotting out and laying the mental groundwork for compared to Lucas and now Disney taking the more "make it up as you go" approach. Everything is so well thought out in Dune. The prophecies are so specific and integrate perfectly within the smaller narratives to make such a satisfying whole that satisfies intellectually as well as emotionally. Star Wars has the emotional excitement but man does it crumble if you give either the broadstrokes or most minute details much thought, lol. What does it even mean to have the Sith throwing the Force out of balance? Still nobody knows, George included, to this very day. :lol

But George and others like James Cameron know how to hit those crowd-pleasing beats, that's for sure. No way in well would they ever let a Star Wars or Avatar movie end with a bloodless duel between the main hero and a random NPC, lol.

This video explains how they travel FTL with the use of Spice Melange:

To sum it up, Spice Melange expands the mind's ability to see the past, present, and future (Prescience) in a Guild Navigator to see the safe travel route and pilot the ship to it's destination, a Holtzman drive system is what powers the ships FTL.

Ha! That's what I said and it took me less than a minute to come up with it. So much for the great DUNE!!
