Another factor that comes into to play, this piece wasn't done by Weta. I think thats one of the reasons the other SS dios are just sitting there at discounted prices with dealers and the secondary market. Same with Gentle Giants pieces.

I'm sure that plays into it somewhat, though I would have to say the "Weta is better" crowd have missed out on, and are going to continue missing out on some truly magnificent collectibles. I think perhaps the biggest factor today may be that the fanatical LOTR craze has been over for several years now.. People in general are extremely fickle and what once the rage is yesterday's old news....people have moved onto other things.

I think the "wanted" factor is a given in most peoples' grail speculation here. What we're talking about, as Tom said, is the sense of urgency that a low ES brings. We all have limited funds, so if there are two pieces I want, but only enough funds right now for one, I'm much more likely to try to get the one now that will be harder to find (and more expensive to buy) later. The one that is plentifully available will go on the back burner, or wait for a possible sale.

Right if there are two items I REALLY want (the same mind you) and one has a low ES and another high I'll go with the lower ES. If there are two items I want and the one I want more has the higher ES I'll go with that, because the other is an item I've already mentally said I don't have to have even though the ES is lower.

In this case, ES will make or break this piece's "Grail" standing.

As mentioned previously by Woodsy, Tom and RoboDad, lower the ES on some of the better SS/Weta pieces and they would have become grails. The Sauron statue is a prime example.

I'm really liking this one more and more, the more I see it.

It's unfortunate because this is a fantastic looking statue, but yes, I believe the ES will definitely have a bearing on it's "grailibility".

I absolutely love this piece, my only concern being the shininess of the eagle.

I don't think I'll leave this thing out in the open for long, but I've figured out where I'll display it -- on top of the front left speaker in my home theater room.

It's not wall-mounted, so there's plenty of room on all sides for the wings. And it's very sturdy, so there's no risk of the diorama falling and shattering. Plus, it will be at eye level when you stand up, allowing for it to be minutely inspected.

Still, it'll go back into styrofoam soon enough. Too risky...

You guys missed to mention another awesome dio: Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom. -- of course, the proverbial "if done right" applies.

Did you notice that the underbelly of the FB with its sheen makes it look like wet cement?

As for the base, it would be cool of SS honored the option of putting the Middle Earth map on the base which is what made me fall in love with the SS/W bases in the first place. I mean . . .c'mon, they must have thousands of the "Arms of" plaques sitting in the warehouse somewhere! :rotfl

It's been mentioned quite a few times actually.

I did wind up pre-ordering the Eagle VS Fell Beast. I kinda want to see what the edition size is before I decide for sure. So, to play it safe I pre-ordered...

Weta putting Sauron at that ES was the right move in the long run. They all sold, so thats $$$ for the companies involved. If he was 3000 and less (= more), the price would like $900+ on eBay or something.

Try telling someone who paid $300 for a $200 statue it was the right move.

Never really bothered me that Sauron dropped in price. Its an awesome piece and I'm glad I have it.

The High Res pics of this thing are awesome. Nice job SS!!

:cuss why can't they at least post a couple of the hi-res images, some of us have nice large widescreen LCD monitors, the standard pissy little images barely fill a 1/4 of the screen.

I'm certainly no expert on the matter but I imagine this to be a copyright issue. I imagine we'll see those bases again fairly soon when Weta starts producing the Hobbit line.

I really hope so. I'm a bit a stickler for consistency ... which is one reason I'm very apprehensive about the Hobbit production itself (but I know a lot of the creative team remains, and Jackson is overseeing, so I'm giving it a little faith). But the original LOTR weta sculpted pieces remain my favorite collectibles, and I'd love to see that line revived. Dreaming, I wish they'd even revisit the "holes" from the prior films, and fill in remaining gaps. Faramir, Rohan Meriadoc, a few major Dioramas, Etc.

This looks great. I just don't know where I would display it because of the size??
