I finally got around to re-watching the ESB SE edition last night, the one released on DVD that includes Ian McDiarmid as the emperor. I was very pleased with all of the changes but confused about one. I hadn't really paid much attention to it the first time around.

The updated conversation between Vader and Palpatine suggests that Vader was unaware that he had a son. Yet earlier, before the invasion of Hoth, he says something to the effect of "The rebels are there and Skywalker is with them". Was Vader "playing" the emperor? Or just an error.

I think Vader sensed Luke and just like when the Emperor ordered Luke to die and Vader suggested he would be better utilized as a recruit to the Dark Side, Vader didn't want to kill Luke unless absolutely necessary. Vader was playing the Emperor.

it could be that. or playing devil's advocate here... it's possible that Skywalker is just like Smith, Jones, Richards... or any other surname here. His child-to-be was never born, so just because he sees someone with the same surname.... and on the opposite side too, I don't think he'd automatically assume that his child was in fact born... and that the jedi hid him... and that he grew up... and that he got trained by Obi-Wan... and that he became strong with the force... and that he joined the rebels......... lol

much more likely he didn't even give it a second thought. Just like you would't if you saw someone else with your name

just a possibility

I don't know about that. I bet Vader would think twice if he heard the name of Skywalker, especially in combination with the Rebel alliance...

Yea, Vader was playing him so he and Luke could thump Empy.

Yup. Think about it, all Anakin cared about was his family before the dark side, and Palps knew Padme and the kids had to die. He also knew if kids poped up Vader would turn triple speed, he knew. So Vader was trying to play the Emperor. He's cold before he finds out about Luke, than he seems to be refueled in ESB, because he knows his son lives. It gives him meaning. That's why I think Vader was always submissive, he just lost any care for anything since his fmaily died, so he becamse a cold killing machine.

You guys...

Don't you read the scrawl at the beginning? It says that Vader is obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker. He knows who he is. None of this Smith and Jones crap. He didn't want the emperor to know about him and was trying to find him before the emperor found out so he could use Luke against the emperor.

Okay, off the subject but along the same line.
In Jedi, Luke asks Lea if she remembered her mother, her real mother. She said yes but she died when she was very young. HOW???? Lea never knew her mother.
Also, in ESB, the ghost of Obi Wan tells Luke to go to Yoda the Jedi Master who had instructed him. I thought Qui Gon was his trainer.
:maul

Leia is force sensative. Her memories of her mother are force-enhanced.

geek out. i love it.

I think that Yoda instructed all Jedi at one point or another, remember the younglings? I think that Ben told Luke all he needed to know at that time without going into details, being that Luke was dying! "Luke I know that youare freezing to death, but by the way go to Dagobah!"

I think that Leia made a connection to Padme through the force, if I remember right, she held her longer than Luke. I don't know, that explanation always worked for me.

The Obi Wan thing can be explained in that Yoda trained all the Jedi at some point, as evidenced in the scene in AOTC where he is teaching the class of younglings.(Not that I really buy that, but it is an explanation). The Leia thing, I have no idea.

Well, Leia's words are that she remembers "just images really, feelings" so that could be interpreted that she only ever saw images of her mom, and being an emotional woman, Padme's image could give Leia feelings without ever meeting her mother. As for Obi-Wan being trained by Yoda, it is deffinately clear in the PT that Yoda probably at some point gets involved with every Jedi, in fact right in the start of TPM, Obi-Wan says "but Master Yoda said I should be mindful of the future" getting out front quickly that Obi-Wan has had conflicting training between Qui-Gon's rogue style and Yoda's uphold of the Jedi code.

not on the same level as you guys but I always wondered about when Luke went looking for Obi-Wan on Tattooine with r2d2 and c3po in ANH, when Luke told Obi that r2 said he belonged to Obi, Obi acted like it wasnt his and said "I dont recall ever owning a droid"......when surely after everything that Obi and R2-D2 had been through in the previous 3 films would show that he would have recognized R2 immediately........The only explanation I could think of is that he was just acting in front of Luke not to give away any info before he needed too? But it seemed he like R2 and C3PO and Obi never met, But I know their memories were erased in episode 3 so it lies on Obi to do the recongnition.

Who said Obi-Wan didn't recognize him? He just said he didn't recall ever having one in his possession.

He was acting. Either that or he was telling the truth, from a certain point of view (after all R2 was never his droid. :D

And he was getting old. Besides, would you remember a toaster you owned 20 years ago if you suddenly came across it now? :rotfl

Yeah but this was a toaster which had all of his personal information and hopes placed in. :lol

Luke: But you told me you never owned a R2D2.

Ben: R2D2 was owned by your father, Anakin, and was stolen buy me and given to the father of your sister, Bail Antilles. I never actually owned R2, I never said I didn't recognize him. You see Luke, what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
