I just got back from checking this out. I have always considered The Evil Dead as a benchmark in the horror genre and it's been a treasured personal favorite since I first saw it as a boy with my father.
This new Evil Dead lacks the charm of the original, and at times feels a little too clean and polished. I have always adored the slightly crude style and the rough edges that frame the presentation of the original. This didn't feel like the B movie it was based on, therefore some of the magic felt lost in this modern retelling. I did not care for the hillbilly prologue, it was unnecessary and felt very out of place. I would have skipped over that entirely if I were able to. Also I missed the levitating deadites. Now they merely stumble around like demonic puppets, which was cool and effective, but it just didn't feel like The Evil Dead to me. I also felt the climax was a little, well, anticlimactic. It certainly wasn't on par with the final battles in either of the original two films.
All of that said, overall I really enjoyed it. It was well-made on all technical levels and I found myself genuinely entertained throughout. The film featured solid acting, a very good score, great gore, plenty of shocking moments, and a heck of a lot of fun. I may sound somewhat overly critical, but I really dug it, even if it had no chance of topping the original for me personally. I recommend it, but not as much as the original two films.
