Not bad, pretty gory though it could have been more so--I totally expected them to show her cutting off her face but they only showed the result

I watched the original afterwards--big improvement over the original, in every way. Original seems like maybe a student film? It was at around that quality, terrible acting, worse makeup. The new one actually had a story.

It was a student film. People keep forgetting this fact.....The Evil Dead was not a studio funded, or produced film.

Bruce Campbell is Sam Raimi's best friend. Not an actor he hired. The only reason The Evil Dead got any notice at all was both from Stephen King, who recommended it, and it's almost hidden gem in the video store quality.

That being said, i'd give the messy, no budget student film more credit then this remake due to the fact that they ended up giving this film zero character development. When they could have.

Ok, I've heard the 'Zero character development' crack a couple of times, and its just not true. For those listening to the details, they are in there...mommy issues, drug issues, blonde dude mad at former best friend for turning their back, etc....how much more character stuff did some need? A prequel showing them all at work?

the original was more like for SAG. but garnered enough following to reach cult status. it got me interested back then.

havent seen this movie, YET. will see it when it gets here.

Just got back.

Yeah, I liked it.

I was also waiting for the suckage to arrive, but it never did.

But while it didn't suck, there were also some missed opportunities.

But nothing that ruined the movie

Of course the original will always have the soul, because it was the first time we saw the classic basement demon saying her classic lines and doing her classic cackling.

Nothing can beat "Ohhh Ashhh...." the first time we heard it.

But the remake also had some very awesome parts as well.

Scarier and creepier than I was expecting which was a plus.

But just like some have said, I just wish that the final demon had been better handled, that's one of those missed opportunities I had mentioned.

At the end of the day if you want the low budget charm of the original it's available, if you want the slick modern remake, it's there.

Forgettable movie?

Absolutely not.

Is it worth watching in the theater?

Absolutely and a resounding yes!

The unrated DVD should be fun.

Btw, great score.

I like that they pointed out when people talk about the stuff they loved about the original Evil Dead, they're usually actually talking about Evil Dead 2.

I thought the characters in the remake were fine, with the actress playing Mia giving a really nice performance. They were certainly no less shallow than the original cast of characters, and the acting, while not Oscar worthy, was miles beyond the high school production level of the original. Even Ash, who everybody loves, we all love him retroactively because of what he became in ED 2 and AoD.

I can understand the lack of character development in the original. I can't understand the lack of character development in the remake. They had the time. They had the money. They had the ability to get the best of the best actors.

And while it was "better". It still wasn't very good. Which brought the film down hard. I did not care for anyone's death in this movie.

I saw this today, well part of it.

The entire cinema lost power a half an hour in when the dude finds his dog, "Grandpa" and pulls him up and sees that hammer with the quick shot of the possessed girl.

Hope you got your money back

Nope. :lol

Ironically, this is the first time in a long time I've actually paid to go to the theaters. I had connections for almost a decade and never had to pay, then management changed and they got all *****y. No more free swag or posters either. Everyone's tightening up.

Part of the management's policy is handing out these bull **** stubs ("we can't GIVE you ALL your money back!"). The one I got is only good for a 3D movie though, not 2D or IMAX.

I was going to see Jurassic Park afterwards too.

This happened after the book was read. :horror

Umm, it was nice knowing you Difabio. :rotfl

If you are going to turn into a demon, i'm just curious, do you want to be a Batman Begins demon or an 89 Batman demon?

Or maybe a Batman Return Penguin Demon. :lol

Glad to hear you liked it....ironically, I saw this movie in one of the nicest theaters in San Antonio, and glad I did - movie did look real nice

Well, this was number 1 this weekend, so a sequel should be a given....

This is my favorite review, just for the end. The end is perfection.

I enjoy RLM, but Mike contradicted himself, both did really, in one breath they're slamming the characters but in the next breath praising them for not being the typical cliched horror movie characters, albeit going a tad too far and being bland.

Well, that's what most humans are really like, bland.

Yeah it did good enough to be considered a success and warrant a sequel.

The movie deserved it.

It's a great time to be had with a good theater audience.

Some may prefer Rob Zombie gruesome over this, but I was content.

Speaking of RZ, has anyone seen Lords of Salem, what happened to that movie, straight to DVD. :dunno

Yeah but...the characters were still pretty awful in this movie. It really made me not enjoy the movie as much as most. I had a hard time really giving a ****.

They weren't cliche's, that's a good thing...but they weren't anything either. And that's a bad thing. Bad acting, dull characters equal some what off, and some what uninteresting film.

But not entirely. It was still good. Just not great. Nothing made me hate it, so that's a great thing. And as a die hard Evil Dead fan, it somewhat pleased me.

Still. I prefer the original. They did the best they could with what they had. And I admire it. And it's why I look down at the remake for not at least trying to give them film some actual weight, when they had the tools and resources to do so. There is no excuse.
