I've never even seen Artoo in this configuration before. I mean, his head is not just turned around. His front is leaning forward, with the third leg extended in the rear direction!

No!

I can see what you mean but for some reason the movie just works for me. The subject matter is so dark (stolen children, starving people, heart ripping, blood drinking induced zombification, etc.) that without the comic relief, it would have been way to serious of a picture.
