I don't love conventions as much as I used to. Too crowded and hard to see what you want to see most of the time.

A friend of mine goes every year and he said this was the least crowded he's seen it in years and walking around was easy. Of course, the lines were still crazy and Hall H was it's usual mess.

That's the problem the dealers are having. Mile High apparently paid $17,000 for their booth, but had the least traffic in years. Because the con has been spread out over a bigger area, and lots of people are going who can't even go in!

1% of the people there are for the dealers. Yeah from what I have seen its much of a party outside the can with people setting up all kinds stuff outside the con. Most the people going to the con want exclusives and free stuff :lol. I wondered how worth it was for dealers for quite a while since most people are looking up prices in their phones and wanting a better deal. They get the random impulse buys and the oh **** so and so is here I need something to get autographed.

Frank Cho hit it on the head:

This year's San Diego Comicon was an odd duck for me. Everything felt different as if something was missing. First, it was less crowded. I think the new computer chip badge made a huge impact on attendance. You had to tap in and tap out with your badge at the scanner. So circulating your badge amongst your friends was harder and probably killed the counterfeit badge market. Judging by the lower attendance this year, I didn't realize how many people were outsmarting the badge system in the past.
There were definitely less movie/TV announcement events. Marvel has been announcing their movie news at the Disney D23 Expo and other studios have followed suit it seems. There were still big comic book movie related news (entire cast of Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman showed up), but overall there was a noticeable drop in big movie events.
Actual comic book related events have been pushed back further and buried once again it felt to me. Nobody talked about the Eisner Comic Award ceremony. I still have no idea who was nominated or who won. Nobody talked about comic books in general, except for my old Wonder Woman cover scandal. (Water under the bridge. BTW.)
Overall, I feel the true comic book collectors and fans were priced out of the show and replaced with scavengers who wants free stuff or convention exclusive merchandise. I noticed many of my regular comic book/ comic art collector friends simply didn't show up this year.
San Diego Comicon is definitely changing again and I have no idea how things will shake out.

FYI NYCC has had the chip badges for two years and the numbers were on par with SDCC oddly enough.

I have used others badges in the past but only when they were not being used. I didn't realize that many people were actually using fake badges.

They need to stop calling it a "Comic Con". It hasn't been for a decade or more. I think we're going to see a decline with the over saturation of these events.

I know first hand that they're trying to crack down on the attendance. A friend of mine had a badge and couldn't go so he asked me to sell his badge. SDCC had eBay take the auction down then a week later they won one of my auctions but didn't pay in a stupidly obvious attempt to get my personal information.

How about "San Diego's Hollywood marketing and pandering super long line free-stuff Nerdtopia extravaganza supreme!" with a little fine print that says "May contain actual comics"

You know SDHMPSLLFSNES

A few years back I used someone else's order to get a badge since they were not going to be able to go. I was worried they would ask if ID so I took the actual confirmation and made a new one with my name but all the other correct info. I was just going to go off they wouldn't let me in but I gave the the original with the wrong name and they printed the badge and I walked out no questions asked :lol
