I just got back from seeing this and I went in with low expectations after seeing the reviews and still I was dissapointed. Not a good sign when I enjoyed part 8 more than this. Heck even jason X was more entertaining.

The film starts well with some good characters and an interesting premise. But unfortunately the rest of the movie fails to live up to its opening 15 minutes. The kills aren't all that great and when you have characters that you don't care for, the only reason to watch it is for entertaining and inventive death scenes. The film doesn't drip with atmosphere and although jason is more agile and faster he just isn't very menacing. There's a shot of jason in the dark and you can just see his outline and because of the long jacket he's wearing it looks like hes wearing a dress. I wanted to love this movie as I am a fan of all of them ( not great films by any means but they all have stand out moments) but this just didn't feel like a friday the 13th movie to me at all. Also the boobs were all rancid and fake and the gore was pretty much non existant.

I know I'm probably going to get a grilling for my opinion but I feel slightly annoyed as this and T4 were the only movies I was really pysched about seeing.

I just got back from watching this film and must say it was a great Friday film. There is NO comparison to any of the previous Friday films, why? because it never ever felt like a Friday film.

From start to end I needed to be reminded that I was watching a movie about Jason Voorhees, this may sound negative but I mean it in a positive way and also the reason you simply cannot compare it to its previous installments.

I have no complaints about this film other than its dry and boring score. Irish was right about that, it didn't help make it "feel" like a friday film at all.

I give it a 8/10. I still prefer Voorhees's look in part 3 and 4 over this one.

Just got back from the film and loved it. My only complaint is there wasn't a whole lot of suspense until the last three were running around and I loved the opening ending. My wife jumped quite a few times in her seat and even started cuddling up to my arm so it definitely works as a date movie.

America Olivo? Beautiful and I love the silhouettes of her scenes.
Willa Ford? Excellent, never get tired of seeing her naked.
Julianna Guill? Ms Stupendous.....a lot of posters were talking about her bewbs but she had a perky ass too. :lol

It definitely had a lot of easter eggs from the previous franchise, loved the barn scene and seeing the bear in passing when his living area is first found. I also really liked how they paid tribute to Friday the 13th 1 and 2 and still made it make sense. That being said I guarantee it'll get more hate than praise because honestly there wasn't anything too original. There were chances to be original but a lot of the kills were predictable and it played out exactly as someone could have predicted except for the last kill, didn't really see that coming.

I'd see it again without fail.

It was good but it could've been much more!

Break it down Joe:

Kills/Gore:
Some of the kills can be added to the pantheon of the best kills of the series while others were crappy or done off screen (like wtf). I have to tell ya, Punisher Warzone wasn't too far behind with the Kill/Gore factor and even had some better ones than what was on display in the F13 remake.

Scares:
Scary has creeped its way back into a Friday movie which is no small feat when one begins to really think about it. But it begins to suffer from showing Jason TOO much and losing some of that fear. Strangers it isn't, now that movie was scary, at least for me. Still, it's nice that a F13 touched on some of that fear, it's been a very long time that one of these have really been "scary", if any at all other than maybe Part 1. I'll go out on the limb and say that this is THE scariest F13. It would definately scare the crap out of my wife but i'm more numb to the whole Jason-Freddy-Myers thing. Show them too much and forget it, i'm bored, not scared.

Sex:
Decent but not awesome like some are reporting. Could always use more but what was there wasn't half bad.

Story:
So so....but for a slasher flick, I guess not so bad. By the end I was definately beginning to lose interest....and I did. Good beginning and middle and then it all deflated for me. Still, what was on display wasn't so bad.

Action (meaning boring or not boring):
Not bad, enough there to keep you awake. It does get tedious though and I began to lose interest in the action (boooo).

Jason:
He's a good one, faster as expected and rather intimidating and dare I say, scary. BUT, too much of a good thing can only lead to it becoming boring and losing its scare (booo again).

Acting:
Better than I expected. You actually hate one of the leads because you're supposed to so he did a good job pulling that off. If i'm not mistaken he also played a prick jock in Transformers with the same character name (Trent), LOL! Good one Michael Bay.

Final Verdict (See It In The Theater / Buy A Bootleg / Wait For It On DVD / Don't See It At All).

See it in the Theater BUT hopefully with a packed house, will make it better.

As a Bonus:

Is it a repeatable movie? (as in owning it on dvd or seeing it more than once in a theater, very important criteria):

Hard to say with this one. Almost a yes AND no, i'm on the fence right now leaning towards YES but barely. Man did some of those kills need improvement and why show him so freaking much!

Was it better than Zombie's Halloween Remake?

YES although Zombie's first half wasn't all that bad but F13 remake is better all around.

They really couldn't have made it worse than Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason X, could they? The only way to go with quality was UP, not too hard to do after the 2 mentioned.

Thanks for reading

a little mini-review:

expectations:
just got back from the showing. im a huge friday fan and all my expectations were met and exceeded. my expectations however, are very very low since all the movie really needed to satisfy me was boobs, terrible dialogue, gore, and jason. Going back and watching all the movies before seeing the remake, I realized how stupid every single film really is. But, these movies lack pretension. I never once thought that the director was trying to attain critical success (except for maybe goes to hell). They were nothing but slaughter and boob fests that were sure to make money the opening weekend and that's what made them so fun. So in terms of expectations, keep them low, unless you thought friday 3 was better than citizen kane or something.

how it compares with the others:

the kills-
This film basically took all of these elements and wove them together into a fresher looking film. Otherwise, many of the key elements that made the original movies such stupid fun are there. Boring scenes with terrible dialogue, lots of boobs (often fake and gross looking), and some inventive and otherwise routine kills. No friday film lacks its routine kills, just as there are always to be some inventive ones. This one is no different. Some kills were exciting and fun homages to the original (bow n arrow a la harpoon gun in 3, jason stabbing through the floor, etc), some were quick and somewhat generic (impaled on a moose head, impaled through the eye, etc.).

jason-
Jason himself was interesting although not my favorite jason aesthetically. He supersedes the aesthetic of 5-7 IMO, (for me he looked best in 3 and 4) and is a bit more obviously intelligent in this one. Not intelligent like able to hold a conversation, but not a mindless killing machine. Jason is able to set up traps and does a pretty good job in evading/stalking his victims. I got more of a sense of him as a deranged and deformed psychopath stalking the woods rather than a supernatural and mindless force. With the bow and arrow for example, I got the feeling of Jason as more of a hunter and sportsman. Also when theblack guy stabs him in the leg he comes across as genuinely offended/pissed that someone was able to hurt him. Overall, a good rendition of human jason.

negatives and final thoughts-
There were some negatives like the lack of manfredini's score, not enough of part 1, not as 'disturbing' as say 4 was. I personally wasn't a fan of the TCM remake because it missed the tone of the original completely. The family seemed somewhat normal compared to grandpa and the ol hooper gang. It just wasn't disturbing, the michael bay sheen on the movie took that edge away. Instead we get a leaner more action oriented film, but its a bit more excusable for a friday flick since the originals were no masterpieces in the first place, whereas TCM was. But the scares were ocassionally strong and the kills, when inventive, were executed quite well. I also loved the departed-esque pacing in terms of the intro and the opening credits. Had a similar effect as the departed's opening (as much as a slasher movie can). I'd give it a 2 out of 5 as a film in general and a 4/5 as a friday movie. The movie could have been a lot more, true, but I think the same could be said of every previous friday movie. It didn't seem like they were trying to do anything more than pay homage to the previous ones and it most definitely succeeded at that.

Valid Points, good review.

looking at galacticmysterysolvers basket case avatar reminds me that its been a while(more like years) since i've watched basket case again. it was a great movie that creeped the hell outta me as a kid.

I also loved Basket Case back in the day..

"Got time for that?!?"
"You're drunk!" / "So are you!"

classic!

Few more thoughts on homages and the intro:

A huge plus for this movie is that it just took a big poop all over X's attempts to homage the series. Good god, when he smashed the girl in the sleeping back against the tree in the series, it was brutal and awesome, but in X it looked like a youtube send-up. In this one, SPOILERS....he ties her up over a fire inside the sleeping bag and cooks her alive while her boyfriend watches with his leg caught in the beartrap. Two nice homages in one, and very well executed.

And the intro itself, just like the departed (i am using this as a comparison because its the only movie in recent memory that pulled the same trick with the introduction), we get a long 20 (maybe more) minute introduction that recaps the first two films (loosely) and sets up the overall plot...but, my friends and myself and perhaps others, didn't realize the 'movie' in fact hadn't 'really' started up yet. We get the beautiful (maybe best kill scene in the movie) campfire set up, girl burned alive, guy gets macheted in the head after which jason quite awesomely puts his foot up onto his forehead for resistance and pulls the machete out. Then that scene from the trailers where Jason runs up to the girl on the ground. We find out later what happened to her, but no gore, no blood, just a nice CUT right when he's about to slam the machete and it says in blood red FRIDAY THE 13th....I thought it was pure class considering the 20 minute buildup until we see the titles. I think a bit classier than any of the friday openings (apart from maybe 2). Anyone else have the same feelings about the intro?

Kinda feel what you're liking, it was decent.

Spoiler:

My favorite kill

Was

Under

The

Docks

Well executed (pun fully intended)

Oh Willa. The under the docks was good but the best IMHO was a tie between:

The sudden arrow through the head of the Abercrombie model on the boat or the slamming of the black guy through the stump after the poor guy gets axed in the back.

I'll give you the arrow, the best surprise in the movie.

Dock close 2nd then

Both well done

You gotta love the pan of the archery trophies in Jason's "home" to tie that part up nicely.
