a little mini-review:
expectations:
just got back from the showing. im a huge friday fan and all my expectations were met and exceeded. my expectations however, are very very low since all the movie really needed to satisfy me was boobs, terrible dialogue, gore, and jason. Going back and watching all the movies before seeing the remake, I realized how stupid every single film really is. But, these movies lack pretension. I never once thought that the director was trying to attain critical success (except for maybe goes to hell). They were nothing but slaughter and boob fests that were sure to make money the opening weekend and that's what made them so fun. So in terms of expectations, keep them low, unless you thought friday 3 was better than citizen kane or something.
how it compares with the others:
the kills-
This film basically took all of these elements and wove them together into a fresher looking film. Otherwise, many of the key elements that made the original movies such stupid fun are there. Boring scenes with terrible dialogue, lots of boobs (often fake and gross looking), and some inventive and otherwise routine kills. No friday film lacks its routine kills, just as there are always to be some inventive ones. This one is no different. Some kills were exciting and fun homages to the original (bow n arrow a la harpoon gun in 3, jason stabbing through the floor, etc), some were quick and somewhat generic (impaled on a moose head, impaled through the eye, etc.).
jason-
Jason himself was interesting although not my favorite jason aesthetically. He supersedes the aesthetic of 5-7 IMO, (for me he looked best in 3 and 4) and is a bit more obviously intelligent in this one. Not intelligent like able to hold a conversation, but not a mindless killing machine. Jason is able to set up traps and does a pretty good job in evading/stalking his victims. I got more of a sense of him as a deranged and deformed psychopath stalking the woods rather than a supernatural and mindless force. With the bow and arrow for example, I got the feeling of Jason as more of a hunter and sportsman. Also when theblack guy stabs him in the leg he comes across as genuinely offended/pissed that someone was able to hurt him. Overall, a good rendition of human jason.
negatives and final thoughts-
There were some negatives like the lack of manfredini's score, not enough of part 1, not as 'disturbing' as say 4 was. I personally wasn't a fan of the TCM remake because it missed the tone of the original completely. The family seemed somewhat normal compared to grandpa and the ol hooper gang. It just wasn't disturbing, the michael bay sheen on the movie took that edge away. Instead we get a leaner more action oriented film, but its a bit more excusable for a friday flick since the originals were no masterpieces in the first place, whereas TCM was. But the scares were ocassionally strong and the kills, when inventive, were executed quite well. I also loved the departed-esque pacing in terms of the intro and the opening credits. Had a similar effect as the departed's opening (as much as a slasher movie can). I'd give it a 2 out of 5 as a film in general and a 4/5 as a friday movie. The movie could have been a lot more, true, but I think the same could be said of every previous friday movie. It didn't seem like they were trying to do anything more than pay homage to the previous ones and it most definitely succeeded at that.
looking at galacticmysterysolvers basket case avatar reminds me that its been a while(more like years) since i've watched basket case again. it was a great movie that creeped the hell outta me as a kid.
Few more thoughts on homages and the intro:
A huge plus for this movie is that it just took a big poop all over X's attempts to homage the series. Good god, when he smashed the girl in the sleeping back against the tree in the series, it was brutal and awesome, but in X it looked like a youtube send-up. In this one, SPOILERS....he ties her up over a fire inside the sleeping bag and cooks her alive while her boyfriend watches with his leg caught in the beartrap. Two nice homages in one, and very well executed.
And the intro itself, just like the departed (i am using this as a comparison because its the only movie in recent memory that pulled the same trick with the introduction), we get a long 20 (maybe more) minute introduction that recaps the first two films (loosely) and sets up the overall plot...but, my friends and myself and perhaps others, didn't realize the 'movie' in fact hadn't 'really' started up yet. We get the beautiful (maybe best kill scene in the movie) campfire set up, girl burned alive, guy gets macheted in the head after which jason quite awesomely puts his foot up onto his forehead for resistance and pulls the machete out. Then that scene from the trailers where Jason runs up to the girl on the ground. We find out later what happened to her, but no gore, no blood, just a nice CUT right when he's about to slam the machete and it says in blood red FRIDAY THE 13th....I thought it was pure class considering the 20 minute buildup until we see the titles. I think a bit classier than any of the friday openings (apart from maybe 2). Anyone else have the same feelings about the intro?
Oh Willa. The under the docks was good but the best IMHO was a tie between:
The sudden arrow through the head of the Abercrombie model on the boat or the slamming of the black guy through the stump after the poor guy gets axed in the back.
You gotta love the pan of the archery trophies in Jason's "home" to tie that part up nicely.
