Maybe my expectations were in the gutter, but I'm really impressed with these. I had no plans to pick these up but I'm definitely getting them now.
Great pics, The Mike!

Thanks! I'm really tempted to just bite the bullet and get Sam.

Yeah, at first I thought I'd just get Frodo, but I feel like it's both or nothing. I think I'm gonna start building a "front door to Bag End" backdrop for them. I don't want a full Fellowship, probably just the hobbits and Gandalf.
I know it's lame with all the cool evilness in the books and movies, but the Shire is my favorite place and the Hobbits are my favorite characters.
Whenever someone mentions the far-off land of retirement, I always imagine smoking a pipe in Bag End.:D

Okay, so I've had a bit of time to inspect the figures, get them kitted-up and taken some pictures. Overall, I am very, very pleased with both figures. Still have a few minor nits, but they aren't big issues.

And something that is very cool, I think these figures are much better than the prototypes... yep I said it! I'd say Frodo is damn near a 4 star (out of 4) figure, and Sam is just a little bit below that for me

The Good
-The tailoring is unbelievable, even as small as the clothes are they hang very nicely (in general) and even the vests have linings. Frodo's outfit is a thing of beauty... every piece is just excellent.
-Sculpts look great, very impressive looking... Sam is the weaker of the two (which surprised me) but both look great and the paint work on their faces are both very nice. The ringless blue eyes of Frodo really don't look bad in person.
-Accessories are very nice, lots of cool stuff... especially with Sam. Only downer is you can't really logically use Sting and the Exc. dagger with Frodo at the same time.
-Scale, while not perfect... they look great next to the other figures.

The not so good... almost bad
-Ankles and leg joints... kinda loose as we already knew. Not a huge issue on Frodo... but with Sams extra weight he is a pain in the ass to get standing.
-The paint work on the hands does not even closely match the faces. Usually this not a problem for Sideshow, kinda bummed to see it happening here.
- The stands are a pain to get working... I had to get them all the way up under Sam and Frodo's armpits or they would be left hovering over the base. They really should have adapted the stands for smaller figures.

Now for some pics...

Sorry these close-ups kinda suck... these seem to absorb light more than other figures. The earlier shots are more indicative of how they look in hand.

With the rest of the crew... can't wait for Gandalf :rock

Nice to have my fears put away. I might still go for some custom paint on Frodo, just because he's my #1 most anticipated figure, but atleast it'll be something I can wait on.

They both look great. Thanks for the pics galactiboy.

Those do look pretty good, and while the clothing is a strong point -- it needs to be weathered, quite a bit.

Who plans on dirtying them up?

No prob, these really have turned out great... lets just hope the quality continues like this from here on out.

And looking at them on my shelf as I type this you really don't notice the leg seams at all.

I was really thinking about doing stripped down Crack of Doom customs to these, but now I'm not so sure. They'd look great, but I'd lose out on using a lot of those amazing costume pieces and accessories. Maybe these will be sold parted out somewhere, and then I can do it. As they are, I think I'll do full repaints and some minor plastic surgery on the shins to make em smoother. I think I'll keep these "clean" versions of Frodo and Sam.

Good ideas Mikey... with a little work these figures could really be top-shelf. They're awesome as is, but I really can't wait to see what you and the other customizers come up with.

Mine actually shipped separately... although I swore they were supposed to come together:)naughty). But strangely they both arrived a day early!

Only the 2nd time thats happened.

weird. Not shipping together in conjunction with the discrepancy in how much I was charged.... me thinks I'm a gonna call SS CS tomorrow. :pow

looks like monday for me. it's gonna be a long weekend. mine are shipping together cuz i ordered them together as 1 order. i only had 1 order number. is that how you guys ordered yours or did you order them 1 at a time?

Time for a goonies custom. Maybe if we get short round from indy we'd be set. Anywho-figs looks better than I thought they would.

When I track down my set... I'll do the crack of doom versions for sure. The clothes, while nice, seem to give them a bit too much bulk IMO. But maybe with a good futzing and water treatment it would look better to me...
