I kind of agree with Husker on the price jumping, actually. I'm willing to pay this heftier amount, but I'm not fooled into thinking that Sideshow will lose money of they charged what they used to charge.
Hasbro has had the Star Wars license for how long? Their Gammy cost me $20. I know the quality of work is incomparable, but the cost of the license and materials isn't.
This license was a magnificent success for Sideshow back when they were selling them for $40 a pop. I believe they'd still be making oodles of money if the price were still that much. But there's a "perception of quality" issue as well. People really do believe that they get what they pay for, and I think Sideshow charges as much as Hot Toys for that perception.
There's no question in my mind that Hot Toys puts out the superior product, but Sideshow has the better licenses. We continue to compare them and put them in the same league because the price point is the same. In effect, Sideshow is pricing themselves into the higher category.
I'm not saying Sideshow doesn't put out amazing figures. I wouldn;t be on this forum for as long as I have been if I didn't love their work (and I'm a serious brand loyalist), but don't make excuses for major price jumping. I guarantee that The Emperor cost no more to make than Jedi Luke. Probably much less! But The Emperor costs more than double what Luke cost. That's not licensing, it's not the cost of re-tooling, it's simply charging what the market will bare. Any business would do the same. That's why I'm not selling paintwork for a mere $15 a head anymore.
Glad everyone is still so fond of my Gammy, by the way. I'll always be very proud of the work I did on him, even as I'm looking forward to the new Gammy!
