MY big issue is costuming. That's where I get picky.

I think you'll have something with this figure, I have a hunch the clothes may be too new looking. I think tailoring and such will be great, but I think even more than Aragorn, this costume needs to look like it's been through everything.

Well, for me, Gandalf the Grey is like Old Ben in the Star Wars line, so I'm a little more invested into how this one turns out. I've been happy with the whole line, it looks fantastic, but I have a certain mental impression of Gandalf's look and I'm just rooting for that vision to be fulfilled by this figure as my Ben vision was by that figure.

Yeah I know how you feel. If Faramir's sculpt had been bad I would still be weeping because of it, but the sculpt is so powerful that it met my every hope for the character and became my favorite sculpt in any line. It just fit my vision and tastes in every perfect way. The paint, yeah that was a travesty of monumental proportions, but at least that can be salvaged (or in my case, glorified in the highest :lol). But yeah dude, totally, a sculpt is a big deal.

Oh I don't mind it looking new or anything; that can be fixed. I'm talking about hemming, shape, fabrics, does it drape right, is it cut in the right shape, are they missing layers or making shortcuts, do they emulate well the drape and hang of the original, are they understanding they patterns enough to make it look right, etc. If it looks new then hey, I'm cool with that and I can work with it. But if they make one more of those pointy hoods where it should be square (Aragorn and Faramir), then I'll have an issue. :lol

I understand. I WAY more invested in LOTR than I am SW. There for me personally is no comparison because I'd choose LOTR over SW all the time depsite loving both series of films a lot. So I want GTG to turn out perfectly but I think Matt did a freaking great job on the GTW PF so I have no doubts he can't do the GTG 1:6th.

I honestly don't understand the implied fear regarding Gandalf's costume. Boromir's was more complicated, in my opinion, and Sideshow did an amazing job there.

I also think that Gandalf's facial features would lend themselves well to sculpting. There's no nuances to fiddle with. It should be easier to capture due to the weathered/aged features, bulbous nose, wrinkled skin, etc. I would imagine that it would be more difficult to sculpt a young woman, say Eowyn or Arwen, than it would be to sculpt Gandalf. But I may be WAY off base here.

Would love to hear from one of SS's sculptors regarding this.

A pair of scissors and some dirt will take care of that.

I'm certain the costume will be as good as anything we've seen from the LOTR yet. None of it has been a let down.

The sculpt, well I haven't seen a bad sculpt from SS recently. The bane of the sculpt is the paint apps. It's inexcuseable to ruin an expensive sculpt with poor paint. But again, lately SS has been at the top of their game. So I can only hope they will continue to use whomever has been giving them such worthy paintwork lately.

There's no way the sculpt will be bad. Gandalf's face is so wrinkled and nuanced, it's almost a charicature. The sculptor would have to be blind to screw that one up.

To compare 2 pieces, I'm hoping the sculpt looks more LSB Gandalf than PF, I know they're different films, but the overall qualities of the LSB are exactly how I'd want this figure.

If there's one thing sideshow has down almost to perfection, then that is their ability to make detailed costumes for their figures. I don't think I own a single sideshow figure that doesn't have impeccable costume.

The LSB is quite nice so I'd be happy with that as well.

I would put Princess Leia in the category of a seemingly simple costume that turned out relatively bad.

That sucks but I was actually talking about the figures that I own and fugly Leia isn't one of them.:D

I know, I was just saying that Gandalf's costume isn't necessarily a shoe in. But judging by the pic that leaked a few months ago (though its hard to tell) I think it will look fine.

I wonder if they'll go the Commander Praji route and offer a sculpted and a cloth hat. I think sculpted would ensure a better film look to it, and Sideshow's good at making sculpted materials look like cloth.

I just think without wire running through the pointed part of his hat, it's going to be hard to have it achieve the right look. Cloth would be more authentic, but my goal is to have this.

I imagine cost wouldn't be too much more to do both hats, that's the safest bet to satisfy everyone.

i just hope his pipe slides into his staff like in the films. i hope this preorders on the week of toyfair and not the week after like the hobbits during SDCC. my mornings will be open that week. if not i might have to call in sick. anybody here calling in sick to order this?:lol

With Sideshow's ability to put a wire in the cloaks or hoods of the past released characters, it makes me believe they can achieve GTG's hat in cloth as well. Especially the base, and the flat brim. As for the top part to stay firm but bendy . . .that remains to be seen. What say you?
