Well that's the thing, I'm sure a cloth hat would have wired brim, it's the point on top having the right shape that's critical, and 1/6 scale cloth items don't sit like they would at full scale. Time will tell, I'm sure they'll do what's best for the overall aesthetic.

Excellent! About time! :rock

With me having the LSB and Gandalf the White PF, this is a no-brainer to get next!

I would bet it will be dual cloth and plastic hat for GTG. I will prefer the cloth, I am sure (along the same lines as ANH Luke's hat).

First let me comment that...I just got here (this thread) and what a breath of fresh air it's been to read through an entire thread and find a great thoughtful discussion about a figure everyone's excited about that instead of being tinged with rancor is actually respectful with a touch of good humor...thanks for that everyone...really.

Now my two cents...bring him on! There's a good group of sculptors at Sideshow right now..I'd be happy with:

Oluf: Yes, Sean...your view on his sculpt (of Palpatine) being "softer" than Trevor's take on Old Ben is valid...but...he does capture McDirmand's great expressiveness in that sculpt. Everyone's been snapping great shots of him and it's amazing how with just an adjustment of light, the expression changes. And McDirmand WAS softer looking than Guiness...so Oluf hit that nail superbly...having said that...

Trevor: ....as his Old Ben shows, he can captured the more "weathered" man with true artistry. Obi-Wan is truly one of the best 1:6 sculpts I have ever seen and McKellen's Gandalf is another character with the miles of his existence written in the lines on his face. Qualities it's safe to say Trevor could capture quite well...

Matt: My favorite work by this artist is his amazing "Planet of the Apes" sculpts...one look at Cornelius and you see Roddy McDowell's twinkle in the eyes. Sean, you commented how you'd like to see a sculpt that doesn't just "mimic" McKellen, but instead "captures the character"...YES! I couldn't agree more...Matt can nail character...I still enjoy looking and photographing his "Aragon" ...a figure that got trashed here and I still don't see why...

Whoever the artist is...my main concern aside from capturing the essence of the character is...(don't laugh) ...the hair and beard. I HOPE it doesn't miss the mark like Qui-Gon or Legolas did...hair is such an important element of both those characters and while they aren't bloody awful, they just didn't quite get there...here's hoping Gandalf is blessed with an intricate and well-integrated hair and beard sculpt.

Hope they offer two hats....cloth with wire and plastic. Wire in the cloak please! And the accessories...

Folks are coming up with a lot of good ones, but we might remember to keep our expectations from shooting too high...we have seen some instances where characters are seemingly missing something really important (happens with SW all the time..Stormtooper belts anyone? :)) or an exclusive could end up being something most would consider an absolute essential for display (Qui-Gon's desert poncho comes to mind) so we'll see soon enough what comes with this old wizard...

This is a great announcement....this was one character I really wanted to see in 1:6 format in this collection...lookin' forward to him...

See Captain? You're not the only one with some wind in 'em :)!

Great post:clap

Nice JB.

However the EX goes I'm sure, in light of the masterpieces that have rolled out of the SW line lately, this figure will be the flagship of the LOTR line. If I didn't buy another figure from this line I'd at least have GTG on my shelf.

I'm insanely excited about this figure... but I'm gonna pull a bit of a Chavez here, we need some villains next! Just give me a wringwraith, Sauruman an orc or something... just a bit of evil please :monkey3

Actually (prepare yourselves for a shock) I could go for a villain right now too! Now now, don't be hasty, I'm not saying I like the bad guys all of a sudden, but we could take one or two right now. But only if that villain is Saruman, or maybe a Ringwraith. No orcs, mouths, or wormtongues just yet. First give us Saruman, then the Hobbits, and then Gimli. After that they can make any character it pleases them to make, and they can do it till the cows come home as far as I care!

I really hope they actually give us the two-hat option. Of course, I also hope they give us two staves, two cloaks, etc., so I'm not expecting too much. I'm just so excited right now I'm ready for anything!

I like the idea of the book of Moria.
Maybe that is also a tease to a diorama that maybe coming out that some would like to see.
I hope so anyways.

I for one would like to see some non-fellowship characters popping up sooner rather than later... as my biggest fear with this line is that it will end when the fellowship is complete.

Saruman would be an excellent choice following Gandalf the Grey.

There are a few "non-fellowship" charcters I'd like to see as well...
...and yes, Saruman tops that list, followed by Elrond (LOTR version), Eomer and...can we see some of the lovely ladies of Middle Earth soon? Any of them would be welcome...my LOTR display is looking like a "men only" club. :)

I think a molded hat will best capture the shape but a cloth hat would look better, but would definitely be difficult to pull off. One thing I don't want to see is a plastic/cloth hat combo. That will look awful.

Only three more till the fellowship is complete makes me very happy!!! Gimli will be last I think.

I want Moria Orcs in Aromor!!!!!

I'm just glad they didn't do the 2-pack idea someone had. But I'm even more glad we are getting him. Now can we please have some Baddies???!

Wha...? A 1/6 Gandalf the Grey is finally on the way??? Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming. This has got to be the best news I've heard all year!!! How long have we all been waiting for this announcement? Un-freakin'-believable!!!
:chew :chew :chew :chew :chew :chew

Since the Book of Mazarbul was pictured in the production blog pic, it seems likely the exclusive will have to be something else then. I don't mind Gandalf getting it, but it might've been more fitting for Gimli to have it. Oh well, no matter, but this makes me wonder what Gimli's exclusive could possibly be... surely not three strands of Galadriel's golden hair...?

Anyway, Gandalf's hat in cloth as the exclusive would be fine with me, as would both of his Fellowship staffs. In any case, I hope his pipe will be able to fit onto the staff, like he carried it in the film. I'm also anxious to know how his beard and hair will be rendered. With Gandalf, that will be a crucial part of the figure. Guess we'll be hearing a lot more about this in the weeks ahead! :D

Oh yes oh yes, the figure I've been dearly waiting for!! How would they do the beard? Hope it will not hinder the neck articulation. Oh no, the line can't stop after all the fellowship are made, we still have gandalf the white, orcs, the nazgul, etc. :chew:chew:chew

Gimli should have a Uruk-Hai head. Unless there's something else.

I hope they make that page in the book look worn.

my question is how will they do Gimli's head? helmet on or what? i dont think they could make a helmet that tight removable. and i kinda want a helmeted and unhelmeted version.

Next to the book, a severed Uruk head would be an appropriate choice, but since they already gave Boromir a severed orc head, I wonder if they won't decide to give him something different. Maybe his pipe and a pouch of pipeweed... or a big mug full of malt beer? It could even be some extra throwing axes, or his walking axe, unless they include that as a basic. And I really do hope his helm is removable... not at all crazy about helms molded onto heads! :monkey4
