No, I think you're right. I don't care for the likeness either. Of course, I don't really like the likenesses on any of the Star Wars or Lord of the Rings PFs up until the latest crop with Anakin and Aragorn. Luke and Obi-wan are passable, but Han and Leia look very little like the actors to me. Frodo does look like Elijah, but not in a good way, if you know what I mean. Lurtz is the only one I really like, and there's no human likeness involved.

I don't want to take away from the people who just got the piece and are excited by it, since there is a lot of good in the piece as well. I'm sure as a whole it's very cool. I'm just saying the sculpt could be better.

Not to go off-topic, but PF Obi is the best human PF ever. The likeness is spot-on! I don't know how anybody can say that the likeness is "passable?" I agree about the other PFs you've mentioned but this statement about Obi-Wan was way off.

Got mine today. The likeness is fine IMO and there are no problems with it in that regard. The beard is a bit thick but I'm sure its pretty hard to pull off even the SSW bust beard is a bit thick. The costume is amazing and the pose in person isn't as goofy as I remembered. IMO it not only looks like Sir Ian but does captures the essence/likeness of Gandalf. Overall this piece is quite nice and really is a very solid addition to the PF line from LOTR.

:lecture ...true that...Obi wan is simply breath taking. It is mostly the one (out of my collection) I get comments for saying it is one of the most dead on sculpts that they have seen.

The more and more I look at this PF the more I like it and would like to purchase it, almost to the effect that Josh got done with the "stylish lamp"...lol...

If you put a back light to this figure I believe it would look even more awe inspiring!

Its very nice. My folks liked it and they're pretty picky when it comes to things. JDad has not cared for some of the pieces in the past that I've really liked.

I didn't notice the effect with the lamp till I was working on the photos. It reminded me of the scene in TTT when GTW first appears.

i noticed that 2 doilies were needed to contain such an awesome figure.:lol

Sometimes one just isn't enough. :rotfl

I definitely think they tweaked the sculpt some. A lot of us saw the prototype in person at SDCC and I know it wasn't as accurate and nice as this. And the tailoring is just... WOW. :clap

That said, however, the eyebrows, mustache and beard bug the crap out of me. :monkey4

The detailing on the costume is just amazing. I'm not sure I've ever seen better really.

The beard and stache are a little thick. Its the same though on the GTW SSW bust.

Yeah, I am pretty astounded by how incredible the costuming and tailoring is. It really could not be any better.

IMHO, this close-up picture perfectly illustrates what is great about this piece (the costuming) and what is pretty lackluster (the beard/hair):

I mean, that beard is pretty bad for 1/4. It has no detail at all. The detail of the clothing makes it stand out even more. :monkey2

The mustache, beard and eyebrows are not a total deal-killer. But it would've been an easy Grand Slam with better work on those. Still a terrific piece overall, though.

It would be very wrong to say the beard has no detail at all. I'm not sure you can sculpt each individual hair like some are wanting.

The sculpt on the beard looks pretty flat. They could have sculpted more lines in it. The detail on the clothing is phenomenal. The pose is weird. Like they had to have something different and this is what they came up with. And the sculpt looks like a caricature with it's big elongated head.

I figured someone would take issue with that, but I call them like I see them. Compared to the sculpt on the 12" figure, the PF only barely looks like Alec Guinness. I'm not saying it's *bad* per se (and it may look better in person) but for my money, the 12" figure's likeness is far superior.

Well, you can call it like you see it but I might suggest an eye exam. The Obi-Wan PF is nothing short of excellence in the likeness area only surpassed by his 1:6th counterpart. It does look amazing in person too by the way.

Wow, great photos folks. I agree that if the upper lip was a bit more exposed the 'stache and beard would be more natural-looking. Honestly, other than that, this piece is nothing short of breathtaking. The one thing I loved about this piece when I first saw it was the age lines around his eyes. Glad to see that such details are not diminished in the final product. To me, that's what makes him Gandalf.
