forbidden planet have it up.
im passing on this one.
Thanks Doc!. Knew i had seen it somewhere. I am always checking the Forbidden Planet site.
Don't know wether i will buy this one or not when it is released. I think that this one may look a bit out of place in my collection when all the others have a nice continuity about them (same bases etc).
I know that Tom Riddle's Grave would of been totally different as well but THAT would of been cool!

Which ones bonsey?. The new ones in the pics or the older ones that have already been released?.

The Strider and Ringwraith busts. How many LOTR ones have been released as this is the first time I've seen them?

Olny those two are for sale at the moment. You can find them for $40 at any retailers. Gandalf and Saruman were just shown at SDCC but aren't available to order yet.

The Strider and Ringwraith busts are the fist in the LOTR line and are the only two available for order at the moment.
According to Gentle Giant's website they will be both available in stores Jan 2007.
I know that forbiddenplanet.co.uk has them both up for pre-order and at the moment they are giving you a 33% saving on each so instead of being £39.99 (around $74) they are £26.99 each (around $50).
I would also imagine that there will be plenty of them up for pre-order on ebay as well.
I am hoping that the Forbidden Planet store here in London will stock them as they have stocked all the LOTR Sideshow Weta stuff in the past and continue to do so (although to a much lesser degree now) but they don't stock the Harry Potter busts which are made by Gentle Giant (i don't think they stock any Gentle Giant stuff) so i don't know which way they will go.
Fingers crossed.

GG seems to do consistently superior facial likenesses.

Of course, they are famous for scanning -- Does anyone know if they are actually doing facial scan of these actors? It's very impressive, in any event.

I collect the SW mini-busts, but I'm not sure if I want to jump in for another round of LOTR collectibles. With SSW & Sideshow PF, Enough is enough at some point. But that strider is pretty dead on. :lol

They are facial scans. They did them back when the movies where filmed actually.
what part did GG play in the movie production? i don't quite understand why they had scans of the cast's faces.

Good question.....maybe they had a bid on the license at the time and were embargoed until after the SSW license expired???

I think they did do some visual effects, I will have to check the Cinefx mags.

Its my understanding that GG provided the scans used by Toybiz for their figures. And that they did the scanning during shooting of the films.

GG does scanning for most films like this, even if they don't have a license. They are a movie-related company first and a collectibles company second. Just like Weta.

That's what I read.

so it's like they provide scanning services for movies and then the company with the license (new line for lotr for example) then sells these scans to companies who want to make collectibles with those scans?

gentle giant must have really the best scanning machine out there that they are the common choice for this by film companies?

so basically GG did scanning for new line for the lotr. and now they are using their own scans for this new line of busts. i wished weta had the scans. but wait, ssw ones are sculpted but since GG's are scans, does it mean that they are just cut from a machine?

No, it was Toybiz who hired GG to do the scanning.

GG must have at a later date made their own deal with New Line to produce their own LotR range. Presumably the Scans had remained their property (or had reverted to them once ToyBiz had used them) and so they could use them when producing their Bust range.

Here's an article that talks about GG's involment in the LotR films.

These are going to be awesome. I saw the first 4 at SDCC, and I'm very impressed. I'm just bummed that Gandalf is not sporting his famous mage hat. I really hope that GG will do the whole fellowship, plus main supporting cast characters like Theoden, Elrond, Faramir, Eowyn, Arwen, Morgul Lord, Sauron, Witch King, etc.

Very exciting times for LOTR collectors! :bunnydanc

Thanks for the good read. Has anyone here heard of GG doing statues of the LOTR characters?
