What part don't you get!? The file card describes Cobra Commander. In that POS movie, "The Doctor" (ugh..) doesn't become CC until the end of the movie. It's an orgin movie. And if you still don't get my point, it's like YOU complaining that a pre-spider bite Peter Parker isn't acting like a "file card" description for Spider Man i.e. swinging from webs and catching criminals. Yeah.. he doesn't do all that UNTIL he's Spider Man. That file card description for CC doesn't apply to the gayness of the movie because "The Doctor" hasn't come into power yet and isn't the CC we all know. Yet.

Will he become that? He should.. but it'll never happen in a Stephen Sommers movie, unfortunately.

There are many more bastardizations in this pile of crap than just CC. Snake Eyes looks like the Black Ranger, Baroness has been stripped of her accent, Ripcord changed ethnicity (for no apparent reason), Stormshadow's a little emo ^^^^^^, the unnecessary infusion of RoboCop AND Iron Man via the accelerator suits, fully admitted to by the producer because "I really enjoyed those two films" ... and FYI, the Edward Scissorhandsy pic of the "doctor" with the see-through scrotum over his face IS Cobra Commander. So by the end of this tumor, we do see what is supposed to be the CC we all know.

Nam... it's obviously futile.

The movie is trash. I think everyone familiar with the source material knows that. Everything about it screams "CRAP". Maybe people who didn't grow up with G.I. Joe or people who aren't familiar with the source material might enjoy it. But I even have my doubts about that.

Just so it's clear, this was the post I originally responded to:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, prolly the worst choice for Cobra Commander. Have u seen this interview? jeepers, y dont u treat the mythology with some respect. what a flippin idiot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs4RYwl7fa0

My response was:

We're talking about G.I. Joe right? The cartoon. The kids cartoon, right? Kids cartoons have a "mythology" now!? Adjust your tin foil hat, son.

DarthNeil replied with:

No.. We're talking about the comic BOOK... The one that had over 150 issues.

And I responded:

That's where the confusion stems from. DarthNeil and others thought my comment was directed towards the comic. It wasn't. It was directed towards DarthNeil bringing up the comic in response to me talking about the cartoon. Which made zero sense to me because they're two completely different things.

Maybe someone needs to justify squatting in line the night before tickets go on sale? :huh It'd actually be funny to see him get cited for vagrancy being the only one there and all. :lol

Huh!? You think I'm interested in this movie!? :lol

Dev, I kinda agree with you.

What JGL said in that interview, didnt come across as someone who didnt care, just someone who's having fun playing a villain. I mean seriously, every actor always goes "Yeah! That was fun!" when playing a villian. Villains are just fun. JGL didnt say "Yeah, I hated everything about GI Joe, so i'm playing this so and so....".

Are they doing the character justice? No, I dont think they are. But you cant fault JGL. He's an actor. The director directs him how to act. They dont just show up on set and go. (Some do....but most dont). If SS tells him to act like a crazy doctor with a lisp, then JGL is going to do his best to meet the directors demands.

Dude, IMO...He sounded like he was ashamed to talk about it.

He might have been. :lol

But from what he "said" he didnt seem like he was trashing GI JOE or the Cobra Commander character.

I got the impression he felt awkward because he was there promoting "Stop-Loss" which is a serious drama and then all of sudden he has to start talking about the G.I. Joe movie which is like the polar opposite of that. :lol

There's a certain amount of disrespect involved when you don't look at where a well established license has been before taking it somewhere else. 90% of the time the film turns out to be ^^^^ and the actor either blames it on the director, the producer, studio, etc., or owns it with a cop-out, bull^^^^ excuse like "nobody understood what I was trying to do." It's further emphasized when that that somewhere else the actor is taking the character is for a dip in the toilet of a gas station restroom.

But as mentioned repeatedly in this thread... the actor isn't the one taking these characters anywhere...

The screenplay and the director already took the characters really far from the source material and well into thae land of idiocy long before a single actor was cast.

I don't think it's necessarily fair to blame the actors for doing the job they are paid to do which is "do what the director tells you to"

That's an actor's job.

Levitt is an excellent actor Imho... (he was really good in Brick) maybe not well suited to the role of cobra commander, but that is not his fault.

that's the director's call along with the studio and the producers...

if you are an actor who wants to make money and someone offers you a high profile job like this... you take it no questions asked. especially if it sounds like fun.

Did you actually read the interview? :huh It pretty much sounds like not only did he demand his face be seen, but that he's bringing a substantial amount of "creative license" to the character.

Yeah, but the DIRECTOR TOLD HIM how HE wants JGL to act. JGL is just going to continue it.

I think a good bit of his career is riding on this film. He had that Spike Lee movie a year or so ago and that was just about it from him since his 3rd Rock days.

Not true.

watch Brick.

it was nominated for a whole bunch of awards and won quite a few of those...

He also won best actor at the 2005 Seattle International Film Festival for Mysterious Skin.

Since third rock he's appeared in several other critically well received films as well... 500 Days of Summer, Stop-loss, The Lookout...

his career was in no danger.

and despite this crappy joe film he'll probably go on to be one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation...

he's not the real problem with this movie... Sommers and di Bonaventura are.

Given a decent screenplay and a competent director Levitt probably would have made a decent Cobra commander. Not ideal perhaps but acceptable...

unfortunately this screenplay and director are the absolute opposite of acceptable.

Really? Interesting. I didn't know he was around like that. Too bad he got saddled with this script/director.

GI JOe is basically for dumb mutha^^^^^kas
Also why the ^^^^^* this idiot is playing a Cobra Commander. I guess the casting director was having fun smoking crack and casting at the same time.

wow, what a let down it was seeing that interview. What a shame. I find it funny that he sits there and if you look closely you can actually see him get physically uncomfortable talking about the movie. He also basically states that the movie is everything we don't want it to be.
