Excellent list of movies, Irish!

Not only did we have great movies I think it was more fun to see movies back in the 80's than it is now.

I remember seeing movies like Raider of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back & First Blood at a place called the Cinedome (no longer exists :() in Orange County, SoCal.

As far back as I remember it seemed like tradition that before the movie started people would bring beach balls, inflate them in the theatre & start hitting them around the audience. People arrived early for the stuff!

It was really fun when the ushers would try and get the ball! Once the light got dim the beach balls disappeared and everyone enjoyed the trailers & the movie.

Nowadays all people want to to is talk on their cell before and sometimes during the movie!

That's why I carry a cell phone jammer into the theatre these days. :)

A friend of mine who I haven't spoken to in a while decided not to heed my warnings about ROC and went and saw it opening night. Here's the review he just shot me via email:

G.I. Joe is every bit is bad as the reviews would have you believe. Worse even, it's doubtful they understand how bad it really is, just as they don't understand Transformers 2 success. But suffice to say absolutely atrocious casting and writing create a movie just right for the "talents" of Marlon Waynes. They do so many horrible things for no reason, including Snake Eyes. There are a couple of watchable action sequences, but the movie is never truly just easy to watch, it is, for the duration, awkward enough to induce wincing. It's a kind of unholy fusion of the Van Damm Street Fighter movie and Scary Movie, but with more money, and probably less quality writing. Just brutal.

Instead, go see The Hurt Locker. 5 out of 4 stars. If you see one movie this summer, that's the one.

:lol Ouch.

Hurt Locker was a good movie, great realistic drama and great realistic action.

GI Joe was a good movie, great unrealistic drama and great unrealistic action.

I don't know if The Hurt Locker could sustain "The Rise of Cobra" under its title name nor do I believe GI Joe would make any sense having "The Hurt Locker" attached to its title.

I have a feeling that the filmakers and studios knew exactly what they were giving us with both those movies and I'm happy that it cost me only 20 bucks to enjoy both for what they are.

If I wanted to enjoy the Sci-Fi spectacle of Apache helicopters facing off against laser gun ships and ninjas jumping over 50 cars being thrown at him, I got what I wanted.

If I wanted to enjoy the tense drama of the Iraq war as seen thru the eyes of a bomb squad soldier, I got what I wanted.

I'm just fortunate I guess that I don't need to be told that the Hurt Locker is the "better" of both films, I kinda figured that out on my own which was the over the top Sci-Fi spectacle soley based off a toy line vs the real gritty war drama, you know....the one I read about and watch on CNN on a daily basis.

Actually, now that I think about it.....I'm going to go see GI Joe again and not The Hurt Locker although I do hope that The Hurt Locker gets an Oscar nod, it seriously deserves it.

Thanks DS, just trying to keep it real.....at least for me anyways.....:joy

GI Joe is now one of my "guilty" pleasures.....Just for special effects reason alone I wish I could take that movie back to 1977 and show it to people right before they walked into Star Wars.....:lol

George Lucas would be broke,,,,:lol

You missed his point. Of course Hurt Locker and GI Joe are different kinds of movies. He simply recommended skipping the bad movie in favor of the good one.

To any and all who think this is the worst movie of all time, i entreat you to go watch
Hawk the Slayer.

Granted, however, That Daltan, the Bread-slayer, really makes the film.

Point being, this is not a great, masterful work of cinema. We KNEW it was not going to be. But aside from some HORRIBLE one-liners, and a few "why the hell did they do that" backstory decisions, it's actualy pretty entertaining.

it sucks it sucks it sucks. Trust me this movie blows. the action is very average. Lets be honest, today movie-goers are dumb down. Freaking Jackass and Borat are mega hits, that should tell you something. It dont take much to please these movie-goers

Did anyone notice the "What did you say your unit was called?" And "Real American Heroes" lines/scenes from the trailers were cut out? I always find it odd they'll advertize with something not actually in the movie.

I assume that wasn't supposed to make any sense?

I haven't seen this mentioned but the mind control mechanism used in GI Joe reminded me of the mind control mechanism is X-Men 2!

Both were injected in the rear of the neck (but closer to the ear in GI Joe) and both were circular in shape.
