They got about as many things right as they did wrong. When a film requires people to explain what was seen it ultimately didn't do a good job in telling the story.
There are a lot of things it got right like the constructs which before this was limited to hands or even at point invisible like the Force. Oa and the alien which originally were never to be shown. Sinestro which originally was drawn up like a gruff dictator who cracked jokes in the Jack Black version. A sequel would be great to see especially because WB/DC will definitely take the critic panning into account when forming a sequel but if it doesn't happen it's not the end for GL on screen.
DC has to compete with Marvel, Green Lantern is one of their biggest properties right now, which means they'll shuffle him to the end behind Superman, the new Batman and The Flash and then reintroduce him with a new cast, director and writing crew. I think this group is more than salvageable but if not cest la vie.
-People didn't understand that the GLC status quo was no fear and so Parallax was beating them because they thought they needed to have no fear instead of overcoming fear. That Hal brought in a new way of thinking that could defeat it.
-People forgot that Abin Sur, a lone GL imprisoned Parallax because it was glossed over quickly so when Hal beat Parallax which it seemed that the rest of the Corps couldn't do it seemed strange.
-People missed the fact that Krona, the lost Guardian was possessed by Parallax which is why he looked like he did.
-They tried to go the Batman Begins route using Hector but then tried to use an entity that is much too complex for an origin film and the didn't accurately explain the two enough to make it plausable.
