The GLC really do enjoy getting together and shooting all their rings into an empty sky, but when a major threat comes around, they're knowhere to be found
I'm almost certain that 20,000 rings shooting simultaneous constructs at Parallax would've hurt a-lot
It looks like GL's weekend box office will be just under 53 million.

Certainly not ideal for WB but not exactly a catastrophe. The test will be in the weekly percentage dropoff going forward.

Considering they promoted the hell out of this thing, and there will most certainly be a dropoff next week, it ain't great.

Green Lantern's start landed behind X-Men: First Class's $55.1 million and Thor's $65.7 million. It was also less than The Incredible Hulk and the two Fantastic Four movies, and the attendance disparity was even greater. Green Lantern's estimated attendance was even lower than Daredevil and Ghost Rider.

Yeah Cars 2 is gonna be a hit, hopefully Green lantern can hold onto a 2nd or 3rd place ranking with another 20-30 milli in the bank, its not alot, or a success, but it will keep it alive.

If Ghost Rider is getting a sequel, so will GL.
Like Mike had previously mentioned, money that was invested now in the R&D and other Special-Visual Effects needs will cut the cost of the next movie.
In other words, WB will definately not spend 250-300 million on the sequel but because of the investments already done, the sequel still might look like it cost 200-250 million.
They will stretch out this current investment and eventually recoup their entire budget and even earn a profit one day, eventually being the key word here
Yeah it might take awhile, but last I checked WB isn't in a rush to go anywhere, are they.
Mike, what's your take on the actors side, this movie already didn't have A list stars (I don't know, is Reynolds an A list?), so I don't see much savings on this front.

Honestly, I have no plans to see Cars 2 in the theater. I will catch it when it comes out on Blu or Direct Tv but that will be my route.
As long as GL isn't Battlefield Earth bad (which it seems it isn't) then I look forward to watching it one day. Its always nice to see a studio go all out in introducing a new hero, even if they ultimately miss the mark.
Another thing to remember is that 53 million isn't what we had hoped it hasn't opened in every foreign market either. So that will help out its overall total. It will get a sequel and I think that one will be even better because of the groundwork laid by this one.

I agree with your point, though - Cars has captivated kids through the movie/marketing/merchandise in a way that I haven't seen since Star Wars. It's a guaranteed blockbuster.
But even as a die-hard Disney/Pixar fan I haven't seen anything in the trailers that makes me want to see this movie. I don't think Pixar is capable of "phoning it in" but I look at the clips from Cars 2 and think it's as close as they will ever get. This will be the first Pixar movie I skip in the theater.
Just to stay on-topic, real life has kept me from seeing GL this weekend but I hope to get to it by Tuesday. I am glad to see the usual Debbie Downer parade on this board has been largely absent from this thread.
Its not battlefield earth. Missing the mark really I think will come down to each person. For me they didn't and have made me more interested in this characters world and the character himself.
Too bad WB didn't have GL finished a year earlier. Last summer was pretty weak in terms of superhero films and it probably would have fared much better.
I'm pretty ambivalent toward it and its heightened by the fact that Thor and X-Men:FC were so good and there's still Captain America on the way. There's almost a glut of good comic book movies this year and at this point I'm not going to bother with a fourth entry in the genre, especially one with so-so reviews both in the media and here on the boards.
