That's one thing I enjoyed about Thor--they didn't spend much time on an origin story, they just got things going fairly quickly with the Frost Giants sneaking into the armory and Thor leading his friends into battle. They didn't waste too much time with exposition. Odin mentions a powerful hammer and you see that Thor is in line for the throne and Loki might be envious, and that's pretty much all the audience needs to know for the story to get moving.

Best Super Hero movie so far this year...Cap should top it hopefully! Marvel gets it!

Right but I do think with Thor and GL thats where they differ. You can do that successfully like with Thor (which is still the best movie I've seen in 2011) and get away with it. I think with Green Lantern you couldn't do the same thing though and like with BB you have to start from scratch.

I don't think the origin story is essential for GL. The reason it is for this film (from what I gather) is that a big chunk of the story is his learning to deal with his ability, overcoming his fears, etc. They could have done the same with Thor--showing how he became what he was as an adult, developing the huge ego and narcissism, examining the complex relationship with his brother and father, looking at his history learning to lead and fight, etc. But the story didn't require that, so it wasn't necessary, and no one seemed to mind. If the writers of GL also wanted to just jump into a major galactic conflict that an established GL had to deal with, the audience would have been fine with it and wouldn't have minded so much IMO. They could have given more subtle references to his finding Abin Sur, training, learning to overcome fear, etc., and I think a large part of the audience would have been sophisticated enough to read between the lines (as they were required to do a bit with Thor).

Lol. Thor has the least complicated origin of all the big Marvel movie heroes. Like the x-men he was born that way. End.

So he was born with the precise constellation of personality traits, experiences, motivations, training, fighting ability, etc. that he had as a full grown God? It's all about the story you want to tell. Obviously, the GL creative team wanted to do an origin story, and to base a film around the early career of Hal Jordan, so they did so. The Thor team didn't want to do that, so they didn't. But either could have taken a different approach if they chose to and failed or succeeded at their respective efforts.

I enjoyed it and so did my son:

That's a very cool pic, Irish! :rock :rock :rock

You're son looks extremely happy! :D :clap

The fun thing about GL is that because he was a B-Lister for so long they haven't ____ed with his origins too much, if you read Emerald Dawn I and then Secret Origins you'll see how little they've change and how it's just been more modernized over the decades.
:lecture
I'd ____ a power battery if any sequel had a Sinestro Corps War storyline! :lol

Me too.

The Sinestro scene at the end was badass. I was like "____ Yeah!!!!"
I think Sinestro in this movie isn't really a typical villain, but more of a whatever it takes to win kind of character. We saw him frustrated with the Guardians several times in the movie so I think it would be great if the next one started with him continuing his push for them to allow the new ring they forged for him, and him ultimately taking it and building his own army.

I'm not going to bash this movie, because I haven't seen it yet. And I realize the critics seem to be a bit harsh and people are enjoying it.
That being said, I have to say I totally love X-men First Class, and the class, style, and smartness that movie brings to a comic movie.
Although I may like GL, I can't see it being better for me, than X-men, or even Thor. But that's just my opinion, based on what I've seen and what I really already love about X-men.
Hopefully I'm not alone in thinking X First Class, might be the best superhero movie this summer so far.
But I will see it soon and form my opinion of it. If you guys are saying it's decent, but not perfect and doesn't flat out suck, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. lol

Thor hit $66 Million. The studio considered that a success because the hero wasn't well known by the general public and the mythology was a hard sell for years. Green Lantern falls in the same exact category so that is the magic number. If it can do or possibly surpass $66 Million, it'll be considered a success if it falls short, it'll be up in the air on whether they'll be another film.

but wasn't GL's budget a ____ load more than Thor?

I have been a little skepticle about the movie based on what I saw in the trailers. And I am not a big DC guy so I know very little about the character. But to be honest with everyone, the discussion about the flick has me a little more excited to see it. It seems to be what I would expect from a SH movie. Not super deep, but entertaining just the same.

Now I REALLY want to see it.

I felt the same way until I saw Green Lantern. I liked Thor and can't think of anything bad that really stuck out, but also haven't had the feeling that I need to see it again since leaving the theater. First Class is awesome and have seen it twice now. Green Lantern is probably my favorite comic movie this year because I like the character more than the others so far. The movie was pretty fun, and then it had it's serious moments too. My biggest complaint is that there wasn't enough time spent on OA with the other lanterns.

The budget was $150 Million for Thor, while GL's topped out at $300 Million including promotion and post-production effects. Removing those two pieces, GL's official budget was $250 Million. I don't believe the budget including promotions and post were given for Thor mainly because the $300 Million mark in any capacity is usually a marker for a flop. The thing is that a lot of what was done was the groundwork basis for the constructs, Oan and Alien effects which wouldn't need to be done for a sequel so that extra $50 Million wouldn't need to resolicited.

The studio is worried about whether or not people will see a GL film and given that the character is in the same general knowledge base as Thor, it's a good barometer. If a sequel is pushed forward with Green Lantern, expect that their initial budget be cut meaning locales, additional actors, stuntwork, etc to compensate for needs in effects as well as paying the various effects studios to reuse the basis for the effects already done whereas Thor would probably be given a larger budget.

Warners isn't just watching Domestics, like Disney they are watching International box office and will be watching merchandising and home video sales which is why they are giving parallels to Tron: Legacy.

Saw it this evening. Theater had 10 other people in it for the last Saturday evening show....

I though it was okay, not great. Gotta agree with a lot of the negatives I've read here and elsewhere...
  • This movie looked like it was edited with a chainsaw...choppy and ill-paced.
  • Ms. Lively is ironically named - she is not lively in this movie. No chemistry with Reynolds, very dead-eyed, monotone performance. Haven't seem a female lead this lifeless since Megan Fox in the Transformers movies. Pretty cover, blank pages.
  • No sense of build-up to the climax...when it arrives, it's like "That's it?"

Now there are things to like....
  • The "lantern" - "Oa" scenes were pretty cool - hated it when the movie got earthbound for such a long stretch.
  • The lanterns featured the best performances in the film too.

It's not one I'll see in the theater again. One can see the effort there, from the great designs and exotic locations to a couple of the performances (Strong and Morrison were pretty cool). But the leaden mid-section, the choppy pacing, bad groan-inducing dialogue and uninspired performances make this a bit of a disappointment.

Cheers to those who are digging this, but the Lantern's a little too dim to get any more out of me...

Just got back from the theater and OMG Marvel has nothing to worry about! Very disappointed. DC really missed an opportunity here, I guess they should stick with Batman.

Thought it was average. 6/10. Drug a lot. If Parallax was such a threat, why not send all the Lanterns to stop it? :slap

Sinistero came off much more interesting and acted. Should have been his movie. :dunno

the fact is that they are successful despite the negativity they get from fans of the games and critics.

Funny thing is i also loved Mortal Kombat which was directed by the same guy as RE and I'm a fan of MK too.

and Resident Evil Afterlife debuted in December dude hardly end of Summer. :p

Nah here it came out in September I don't no where u got that from

Watched it last night. I thought definitely not as good as X-Men: First Class... but not too far behind Thor... still an enjoyable movie. With the actions it will probably be a fun ride for kids.

The kiss of death... :monkey2

Not really. It's just a fun movie for the family to enjoy, it's no Dark Knight, but I don't want every Superhero movie to be dark and brooding (Hey they can do that for the sequel, if it gets one). The story reminded me of The Last Starfighter, which is no Empire Strikes Back, but I still enjoy watching the movie now and then.
