Re: Green Lantern Movie Trailer.

eh I'll watch, but I feel Ryan Reynolds is going to ruin Hal Jordan for me. Was excited about the movie getting picked up until Reynolds was announced as Hal. but I guess we'll find out how good it will be once it's out, but I don't have any high hopes

Re: Green Lantern Movie Trailer.

Franky, Reynolds seem to fit Kyle Rayner more than Hal Jordan. Then again, I'll reserve judgement until I see the movie.

BTW, reading the comments in the YouTube vid made me realize how much of an impact the Justice League Unlimited cartoon was. Mane of the posters thought GL was supposed to be black (John Stewart) and didn't know Hal.

Agreed. He would have been a better choice for Kyle.

For many, many people, the cartoon series is where they get most of their 'comic book' knowledge from. I am pretty guilty of that myself. But even I knew John wasn't the original GL (either is Hal really). Thankfully Blackest Night has really expanded my DC knowledge outside of Batman.

Re: Green Lantern Movie Trailer.

I have a feeling that this movie is going to make me start reading Green Lantern. Blackest Night caught my attention and looks pretty good, but since I know nothing about Green Lantern I've avoided it.

Re: Green Lantern Movie Trailer.

For those who don't think Ryan Reynolds should be Hal show they know nothing about Hal. His character was always written as a smartass who is rarely serious. Why do you think he makes egg beaters or boxing glove constructs? Even in fighting he makes himself laugh. Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night are all tests because he has to be serious but the movie harkens back to the classic interpretation of him.

As for the suit, its set up to look like the same rubbery substance second skin as we saw in Ozymandias or Nite Owl II in Watchmen so I guarantee you that Hot Toys will take that route.

Third, there is an existing thread raging about in Movies/TV so Mods do you your thing but its the third one that has to be merged so at least the hype is beginning.

Except HT didn't make a Nite Owl or Ozy :lol

HT didn't release them. I have a funny feeling that the prototypes were made but the choice of how to release them screwed us all from getting them.

Well we know they at least worked on Rorschach, heck he is still possible I guess. He was around the same WIP stage Ghost Rider seemed to be in that infamous pic. But I'm not sure if they worked on anyone else besides him. And really, he should have been the first figure made. I still don't know what HT was thinking doing SS first. Comedian, sure, he's an awesome character, but SS really needed companion figures to sell her. She didn't have a lot of screen time with her pops.

But back to GL, I'm not sure I'd want a rubber suit for him though. I suppose if they could work out better articulation (like hide broken up areas within the muscles) so we aren't afraid to pose him a bit outside of just standing there like Batman. Not sure spandex would work either though. Perhaps have the 'suit' actually be a fully sculpted body similar to Iron Man maybe? So his suit and body would technically be one and the same thing? That could leave room for a light up feature too.

A built on suit would theoretically look too bulky, the suit especially in this film is supposed to be like second skin which limits the materials you get to work with. I have a feeling they'll use the Wolverine styled body and put a rubber suit over it, probably include the bomber jacket, tank top and pants (most of it could be kitbashed anyway) along with an unmasked head (he is seen masked and unmasked in the suit anyway) so you could create your own Hal Jordan.

The suit won't light up but they could in theory overlay on top of the rubber translucent parts to pick up light. The lantern will probably be handled like the Mark 2 accessory with a small tab on the back and be the only light up thing if I were a betting man.

I think detractors who doubt Ryan Reynolds or says he only plays himself should watch Buried. That movie is carried on his shoulders and he does it very well.

It's not Ryan Reynolds playing Hal that bothers me. It's the CGI.....I understand that it's only the early stages of post-production, but did they really have to bring out a trailer so early when the CGI looks that bad???
Don't get me wrong, in some scenes it looks fine. Sinestro looked paticularly badass, but the suit just doesn't look right for me. I'm hoping that they atleast tone down the colours a bit, as they are currently too bright and he looks like someone's thrown glown in the dark body paint all over him :lol

I'll give this the benefit of the doubt, as I've been waiting a long time for the movie. We'll have to wait and see what time brings.

I agree the CGI should have been more polished before releasing the trailer, seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to REALLY get some hype going

Admittedly, I'm no "comic scholar" or Green Lantern expert, but I have read a bit of the stuff from the early-mid 60s as well as Justice League from that era, and I don't agree with this at all. He had silly ring constructs because that's what came naturally for artists and writers in the 60s. But back then, DC sucked frankly. Marvel was where it was at for making high quality, memorable comics. You couldn't hardly distinguish the personality of, say, Flash from Green Lantern from Hourman from Batman half the time. It was like these guys were all the same, but were assigned different powers, stuck in different settings, and given different friends and enemies, and that's where any differences arose from. From what I saw, it wasn't until later (such as Denny O'Neil's "Hard Traveling Heroes" era for GL) that writers started really trying to distinguish the men behind the masks. But even then, the character development really fell by the wayside in much of the 70s and 80s (with some exceptions), so sometimes Hal was a jock, sometimes he was a cop, sometimes he was just gone for extended periods of time and no one noticed or cared (i.e., Crisis), etc. Hal was no more a smartass than, say, Alan Scott in the early days.

Re: Green Lantern Movie Trailer.

The problem with the Green Lantern outfit is that it is supposted to be a hard light construct. So it really is a kind of CGI to begin with. So making it 'comic' accurate as a light construct will make it look fake. Its a catch 22 really. If they just went with colored spandex it would look more 'real' but it wouldn't exactly be accurate. Hard to explain really.

Thanks for that explanation, it makes sense and doesn't bother me that the suit doesn't look completely real. The question is how to present that to the audience so the people who don't follow the comics will know.

The only way would be to have an obvious reference to it in the movie - but that won't push those on the fence about watching based on the trailer over the line.

They did the same thing with Iron Man, especially Iron Man 2 where much of the teaser looked almost video gamey. It's just a move to start the hype before the film is even finished. Hell Iron Man 2 was having CGI tweaks being done the week before the film was released.

:lol I had a whole doctorial thesis on this counterpointing left and right but I'm going to go back and edit just saying "Well that's fine if that is what you think". In reality I'm not going to get in a all out bare knuckled nerd fight about it and bring on the movie.

Aw man, I had popcorn.gif at the ready! Now what do I do?

Jordan always seemed to come across as rather humorless guy as portrayed by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams.
He was always portrayed as the conservative "establishment" to Green Arrow's liberal "power to the people" hero. (How times have changed)
Even lately in All star Batman by Miller and Lee, Batman comes off as funnier than Hal especially when he has Robin paint the room yellow then proceeds to let Robin kick Hal's ass (almost killing him)
I would like to see Ryan play this straight for the most part.
