For me, i felt alot of fear from the beginning since the brothers got in the mechs. I symphathized because i am close to my brother as well. It also gave me a sense that the robots were vulnerable to the monters. I felt bad for all the people that died inside the robots.

Well, OK,
Let's leave Cloverfield out of this...

I honestly didn't think, "awww, what a cute little girl"
All the time I was thinking "Holy **** that poor girl is getting chased by a ****ing monster the size of a building!! Run girl, run!!"
She was crying and scared ****less!! If that's not fear, then I do not know what it is... :dunno
I did, and I heard a couple "awwws" around the theater, but not an "aaaw" out of cuteness, more like an "awww" out of "poor girl" sympathy :lol

Of course that was at first, before she was chased by the Kaiju, then it was "run kid run" but it was definitely not fear.

It's more the uneasiness of seeing a huge strange monster, it's a mix of amazement, uneasiness, disbelief and fear is what I'm talking about and I'm obviously not making myself clear :lol

Totally agree with you on that...
actually GDT said that was the whole point...
they are pals not lovers...

GDT certainly knows how to make things light to watch and still compelling.

I'm hearing that this will become a franchise? :yess: Cause I'd like to see more of these 2.

I guess, what I'm trying to say, is that I wish that the Kaijus were introduced in a more mysterious kind of way, to build anticipation for the 1st encounter which IMO is supposed to be shocking, the fact that the 1st one showed up so suddenly kinda killed all the expectation for me.

I know what you mean. I wished he could have implemented more of that build up like he did with pans labyrinth.

But this isn't that kind of movie. It's made for everyone. But mostly kids.

I love Cloverfield and all, but this isn't that kind of movie. It's meant to make you happy. Not terrified .

That's because it's not a kids' movie, the fact that it doesn't have inappropriate material for kids doesn't make it a pixar movie.

Plus, kids can handle a lot worse when it comes to frightening movies and I'm not even talking about an extreme fear gore **** fest, I'm just asking for a little uneasiness and anticipation in the introduction of the kaijus, make me feel threatened, that's all.

It is a kids movie. Del Toro has stated this multiple times.

It does work on more then one level, but he made it to appeal to kids. And the kid in you.

Cloverfield, (and I don't give a ****ing **** about your seething hate for the movie, so **** off :lol) is a horror film. For adults. There's a difference. The film offers little "fun". It's fun in a horror sense, but for a young child, ages 7-12, it doesn't off the "fun" and non cynicism that Pacific Rim had.

definitely more kid friendly then any non cartoon released this summer

Don't worry, I like Cloverfield very much too :lol

It is not a movie for kids, it is kids friendly, but one thing is not inclusive of the other.

Maybe the word "fear" was stretching it a bit, I don't mean texas chainsaw massacre fear, I mean an anxiety-ish feeling that a kaiju should inflict, long story short, it needed a better build up and anticipation for the introduction of the kaijus.

No, Del Toro made it for kids.

But even if you take that away, he didn't want you to feel bad during the movie. he wanted you to feel a sense of awe during the battles.

You know...good feelings, not sad Man of Steel feelings. :lol

You couldn't hold it in could you? :pfft:

It is obviously not a kids movie, but it is kids friendly.

All I'm asking is for a little anticipation for the 1st encounter, stop trying to make it sound like I'm asking for birth of the devil child. :lol

Well....you are. The film is like Star Wars, where it takes place during the middle of the story. Not the beginning. :lol

:lol You are. That was what I was replying too. but with a :lol

It's the visual equivalent of the opening crawl. They could've told that whole scene with text, but it was much more interesting with visuals.

My very minor gripe with the initial scene which apparently you blew out of proportion, is that the scene gives you a full view of the kaiju right from the start, there's no shock, no amazement, no excitement, it's just "oh look, that big monster is tearing up the bridge", I need build up, expectation.

The kaiju needed to swim a good distance to get to the bridge, what about a bit when a boat or a yate would move weird because of inusual big waves as the kaiju is passing beneath them, and it's occupants looking at each other in confusion? What about a kid in the back seat of a car that's going across the bridge sees something odd in the water approaching to them and says "dad, look" and the father ignores him or something and maybe even an old guy fishing that also sees like a spike of the back of the monster through the water....

Then the kaiju rising up from the water and people going :cuckoo: and THEN the kaiju destroying the bridge.

That's it, that's not going to permanently scar anyone and it would've made the initial attack scene MUCH more effective IMO-
