I asked a gentleman earlier who is from Haiti if he had any contact with his family back home but he said he couldn't. Everything was down, he said. Hospitals, communications, churches, etc. It was so heartbreaking just listening to him talk about it. Meanwhile, another gentleman(who's a conspiracy theorist/ zealot btw!) told me that it was the will of Jesus. Apparently, the earthquake was some sort of punishment upon them for practicing voodoo. Of all the ignorant shat I've ever heard!...

Oh yes, I've heard this too. I don't tend to get along with people who think this way. I just don't understand it.

Nevertheless, I can't really say much about this other than it's very sad.

I just had a consultation with a Haitian faculty member at work, and in the middle of me helping her, her phone rang. Her facial expression just sank and she said, "Forgive me, I have to take this - I'm from Port au Prince and this is a family member who lives there."

During the call she was told her nephew was missing. He was last spoken to two hours before the earthquake and last seen at the university, where he was going to class. She broke down in the middle of the consultation, with me basically holding her up in her chair. I asked if she wanted to stop and come back another day, but she straightened herself and said, "I'm sorry, I spent my entire day yesterday doing this, but I can't keep this up. I need this, I need distractions. Please, let's keep going."

The rest of the consultation went fine, and I walked her to the door while asking about what she teaches. After we talked for a few more minutes, she gave me a great big tear-filled hug. I didn't even know what to say, so I just said, "Thank you," and she said, "No, thank you." and left.

:(

Well, i hope Poppa Shango survived. lol!

papa+shango

Sad this happend.Personally i would never set foot in Haiti..hell even Jamaica, F'k that noise.I am talking outside resorts.
I don't know who Poppa Shango is but I dig his Baron Samedi outfit. When I was into Voodoo/Hoodoo I worshiped him.

As for the "will of Jesus" theory, that just pisses me off. Natural disasters, whether they be acts of "God" or just an extreme case of bad luck, are no place for conspiracy theories. Neither are national tragedies, damn the ones surrounding 9/11 piss me off like nothing else. Conspiracy theorists in general can munch my shorts. Oh, there is a kind that peeves me off more than the 9/11 ones; the moon landing ones.:banghead

They are saying 50k dead, not sure how many are directly from the quake itself or more from the after math, ie no water supplies etc

Every day ever since this happened i read about people losing their family and homes, really sad.I can only imagine how terrible it would be for a Kid finding their dead families in the ruins.

Natural disasters are horrible and effect the ENTIRE world. Saying that a whole population DESERVED what they got (as the 'preacher man' did) is very very VERY self-righteous and pompous... judge not, lest ye be judged. I think THAT is the argument here.

Give what you can to help people in need - treat others as you would have them treat you... one day YOU may need the help as well - natural disasters can strike at any time, anywhere. Donated! (doctors without borders is my charity of choice)

(I'm not even gonna comment on Rush's inane comments - that man doesn't exist to me)

I don't think there is much of a point but to continue to derail threads like is so common on Freaks these days. :monkey1

Seriously, it is getting very old. :sick

Indeed, I'll stop my off-topic bit as well since it's an important subject. Some people are better left ignored.
