This was so disappointing. The writing was atrocious. Hated pretty much every character. The dad saying ' I got peanut butter on my *****' in front of his teenage daughter. He got it on his trousers. The film was boring. Got a bit better near the end but still an anticlimax. Not the worst of the sequels but expected much more. Goes to show that you cant trust critics .
I'd argue that your first statement negates the second. The '78 Myers was not brutal, cold, but not brutal. None of his kills showed or required superhuman strength, in fact, the majority of his work to kill Bob, Annie and Linda was choking, with Bob and Annie taking a final kill hit with the knife.
The only kill I would say was in line with '78 Myers was
the young boy at the bus crash and the female reporter.
A simple choke and neck break. The rest varied from being equivalent to Halloween sequels to borderline Rob Zombie Myers.
That said, I'm not saying this makes it a bad movie, just saying that in order to appease today's mass audience, they had to deviate from the simplicity of the character in '78 to extents that almost make him not feel like the same character.
I watched '78 the other night and I think the one thing that would have made a big difference in this movie is if they had more of the stalking element. He lurked around all of his kills for a fair amount of time before finally attacking, he was a presence, not just an unstoppable killer. The closest to that aspect was the motion sensor light scene.

I would say that the only time 78 Myers exhibited any super normal strength was when he picked up Bob and slid him up against the wall which was an impressive demonstration of strength for a guy with his frame. But other than that you’re right he was no brute.
If anything Jason Voorhees was created as the antithesis of Myers. Jason was the big lumbering brute in comparison to the smooth lurking and svelte walking Shape.
Forget RZ Myers that guy is a locomotive lol
So yes H18 Myers is NOT the same as the H78 Myers.
Stomping on a head is NOT 78 Myers that is RZ Myers lol
Maybe a middle ground between 78 and RZ and the reason for the middle ground is because like you said they needed to show brutal kills as a response to the expectations of a desensitized modern audience.
While the 80’s had some decent gore for its time (poor F13th sequels totally screwed by the MPAA) I have to tell you the gore that is now allowed in R rated horror movies would’ve blown my mind even more in the 80’s.

Let me rephrase as I was high on just having seen it
Sure, the kills were much more graphic this time, but I still got a sense of killing just for the sake of killing (78) and not out of untamed anger (07).
Also, contrary to other opinions, I really felt the way he moved and just acted in general was in line with the original, unlike most of the sequels.
Just skimmed the last few pages. Bit bummed it’s not that well received around here. I honestly don’t understand how anyone can genuinely like some of the other sequels more than this, but to each their own. I’m just glad I can add this to my short list of enjoyable Michael Myers movies.

I would agree with this, his overall motives and behavior are drawn from the '78 depiction, anyone can be killed and there's something almost inhuman about his body language. That, however, adds to the unfortunate shame of having to turn him into a Jason/RZ Myers style killer for the sake of today's audience. It might almost have been better if he was completely unfaithful to the '78 than to be 2/3 but have the most significant 1/3 be so off the mark.
I do not want to be accused of "threadcrapping" nor is that my intention, but of all of the films that were largely negatively received on this site over the year, I feel this one definitely deserves it. It was titled "Halloween" and it did not even feel like a Halloween movie at all... plus there is the bore factor. It failed at two very simple things that it needed to get right if it was going to be so much as passable, and it failed miserably on both accounts. If that doesn't qualify as an epic failure then I don't know what does.
I know I tend to hate a lot of movies - but hey, it's not my fault that there aren't any threads here for the rare movies I like such as Goosebumps 2 or The House with a Clock in Its Walls.

IT: I am curious about the directors cut hopefully he’s not so easily defeated in that. He really turned out to be quite the wimp of a demon. The kids felt forced. **** that book anyways lol
Thor 3: I was actually 75/25 after first viewing but it has turned out to be quite an easy 75/25 to enjoy on a rewatch.
BP: A blind man directed the action.
IW: Thank God your brain was functioning properly with IW.
AM2: True I liked it BUT NOT LOVED IT cut me some slack jack.
Halloween 18: I’m going to give it another viewing for Star-Crunch. Not for Caped Baldy mind you but for Star-Crunch.
Honestly I do need to see it again because first viewings come with alot of emotional baggage.
Wife wants to go so probably this weekend.
I’ll report back my findings lol
Let me break down that list:

It - good, though horror isn't a favourite genre of mine really
Thor 3 - love it but I concede that some humour was completely misplaced, particularly after Asgard was obliterated.
Black Panther - overrated. Who knows, I might have liked it better had it not been so talked up by SJWs
Infinity War - an actual triumph
Ant Man 2 - decent, nothing special
Halloween 2018 - haven't seen it
