I watched the latest episode last night with the wife and I think she is done with Game of Thrones. :lol

I've had my wife quit shows on me before when they became too unrelentingly ugly.

She quit Dexter after the first episode with Trinity. The bathtub scene freaked her out.

She quit watching Battlester after the episode where they introduced Gina being held prisoner on the Pegasus.

I can understand where women would have a viceral reation to what happened, especially to Talisa.

Speaking of writing correspondence, Fiend, is there any backstory in the books in regards to who Talisa is writing all the time? I think in the show she always says it's her mother, but I figured there was something else going on there.

There was a spy in the camp. Some people think she was writing Tywin (annotations in the video explain their theory):

I think it'd be interesting if the story jumped ahead like 10 years. Like maybe with the last book. Then you could deal with the aging thing and it would give an opportunity for some crazy stuff, like the dragons getting to full size.

Dragons tend to grow fast in westeros already.

By the beginning of season 4 I'd like to see those dragons grow to the size of a horse with a 15-20 foot wingspan.

Basically I'm looking forward to seeing her try to ride one. That will be epic.

I'm waiting to see Bran ride one and/or control one with his mind. The Starks deserves some vengeance, and Bran with a dragon ought to do the trick.

I know, I thought that was a bit unrealistic since they had said many times how they wouldn't really be useful for a good number of years, after 2 years or so they really shouldn't have been large enough for her to ride

That is pretty funny that some people would react so negatively that they'd want to stop watching. I was shocked last night, but it just made me want to see more :lol

Hands down my favorite show at the moment :rock

Same here. Not many people will stop watching the show and they will even gain watchers with the word of mouth that has been going around. I already know a ton of people that said they were going to check it out because of all the talk going around.

Some are very sensitive to this stuff, but I know plenty of women that can't wait for the next episode after that :lol

For the people wondering if future seasons will be boring because of said storylines in the books (I don't read them), I wouldn't put to much thought into it. The show writers have already said that there will be changes made if it's not to their liking.

Can't you say that about anything? If it worked, it worked.

What? :lol That doesn't make sense. No.

The blood was Kill Bill style. It was a bit much. Silly sound effects too.

If was the shock of the violence and the characters you cared for dying that pulled it through. I feel like with repeat viewings the Kill Bill blood spray and goofy sound effects will become more prominent.

One thing I fear about the Red Wedding is that it will become something everyone already knows about even if they never watched the show. Like " Luke, I am your father." People that never even seen Star Wars knows Vader is Luke's father.

Robb was killed, not because of his honor, but his lack of honor. The kingly thing to do would have been to honor his agreement with the Fey's about marrying one of their daughters. Of all the Stark children, he was the least Stark-like.

Disagree. Remember he took Rickard Karstarks head even if it wasn't in his best interest because it was the "right" thing to do. Very Ned Stark.
And remember even noble Ned has a bastard. :wink1:

If Jon really is his kid. But that's another debate. R+L=J

Disagree completely.

She is Lawful Evil.

But it's an easy mistake to make. Most people do not get the complex dichoatmy that is the dungeons and dragons alignment system, and get hung up on what they understand the terms "good" and "evil", as well as "chaos" and "law" to truely mean.

Allow me to explan.

In the way the ideals are set, the concept of "good" and "evil " in terms of the alighment system, put as SIMPLY as I can work as follows.

Being Good simply means you put the welfare, wants, and needs of others before yourself. You seek self-improvement, but will only do so it if means the world as a whole is better for it, and you will not step on others, setting aside your own goals if they conflict with the betterment of the world. At their core, they tend to seek "enlightment", or "peace" over power for power's sake.

Being Evil simply means you put your own welfare, wants, and needs before those of everyone else. YOur every action is taken for the sole purpose of fuilling some personal goal, or vendetta, Regardless of what you must do to see it done. But at their core, they seek power. they might wrap their quest for power up in altruistic beliefs, but in the end, it's power they want, for whatever reason ( Revenge, it's rightfully mine, I'm tired of being opressed, whatever)

It's worth noting that a Good character can commit evil acts, if it is in the best intrests of the world, and the people in it.
Just as it is possible for an Evil character to commit good acts, if it furthers their overall goal.

Being Lawful simply means that the character in question believes in order, and likely has some semblence of a code they adhere to. possibly a code of honor, Even if it is a dark one.

Interesting... though isn't she a little bit like this?

Is she seeking the throne for power, or for the good of Westeros?

Can't it be both?

I dunno, maybe, but the effect was achieved, so it worked.

I don't think it can be avoided at this point. It's in newspapers and magazines and all over the web. It's big like "who shot JR?" was big. I'm going to guess new viewers will know about it before sitting down to the first episode. So yeah, it's pre-spoiled for most people now.

Is that enough to ruin the show? I don't think so. I honestly had a bigger reaction to Khal Drago giving Viserys his "Crown of Gold". I didn't see that coming.

Yeah, I think you're right unfortunately. My wife is still only one the third episode of season 2 and Im trying to speed her through it. The biggest problem is that the event actually has a name "Red Wedding".. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. And it gets thrown around a lot. Some ****** posted it on FB and my wife saw it so she already knows that something called the Red Wedding happens. Great.

Is she seeking the throne for power, or for the good of Westeros?

Can't it be both?

.

There is a little of both there, but her Primary motivation is the important one. Those of Revenge, and taking what she thinks is hers "by right"

She tells herself little lies such as those that her brother did, that the people want their "rightful rulers" back and other such nonsense. but in the end, it's about what SHE wants, not what is best for everyone else.

Yes, she frees slaves.
She does this to gain an army.
She wants an army, to retake Her throne, that she feels is hers "by right of birth", and to bring Deat to the userpers.

She is currently, by definition, Lawful Evil. But that dons't make her a terrible person.

Anakin Skywalker, ( terrible writing, and acting aside) is Lawful Evil in ATOC and ROTS.
Darth Vader is Lawful Evil at all times.

A simplier way of looking at evil in the DnD alignment system, is basicly "the ends Justify the means"

Or perhaps " the ends justify the means, so long as the ends are me getting what I want"

I don't think that definition works. I think she is actually an outlaw. Daenerys Targaryen is not a citizen of any nation but has proclaimed herself to be Queen of Westeros. She abides by no laws of Kings Landing or any other kingdom. It is her intention to overthrow whatever King she finds sitting on the Iron Thrown and claim it.

She operates by a code of morality, but not by the letter of anyone's law.

She is neither lawful nor evil. Perhaps the term 'revolutionary' best applies to her.

Was reading That Martin based the red wedding on 2 events, the Slaughter At Glencoe and the black dinner. Crazy stuff

Thanks for posting this, tom. Makes a lot of sense that she was a tool for someone and maybe double-crossed, in this context. We should get some more details next episode, supposing Tywin gloats about how well he pulled it off, in true villain fashion.

When Tywin writes a letter, I guess he means business. Now I have a pretty good idea of what this was all about--it's interesting to rewatch after this week's events, now that we know what Tywin was thinking about during this conversation:

"Whatever I can" sounds a lot more sinister now.
