To be honest, I've felt like most of their real season finales are the 9th episodes of the season (Ned's Dead, Blackwater, Red Wedding) with the real finale dealing with the immediate aftermath of the big WTF moment the 9th episodes have. I hope that changes next season because they are becoming predictable to even non-book viewers.
That's pretty spot on. It makes sense that they do this because you have to show what happened after you go big the episode before.
