That was a very moving tribute. I think this may be how people reacted when James Dean died at such a young age - the potential of greatness makes for more profound a feeling of loss. Ledger had already proved that he could have become a legendary actor and now that he won't have that chance gives his passing more impact to audiences and the motion picture community.

It's nearly been a week and this still bothers and affects me more than any famous person passing that I can remember.

This is exactly how I feel. I've seen lots of his movies but I can't say I've ever been a fan of his. Something about this death has deeply affected.

Very nice words from both Day-Lewis and Nolan.

All the latest toxicology reports seem to point out there weren't enough meds in his system for it to be an OD, most likely seems natural causes, a heart attack or extreme adverse reaction to one of the meds he did take.

I hope a lot of people are eating their words and feeling pretty sick that they chose to take the bleakest opinion they could of Heath Ledger.

I guess the jury is still out as far as a 'definitive' answer is concerned for his 'cause of death', but respect should be afforded to everyone till you have just reason not to.

I was much more affected by Cobain's death, but I would definitely put this at #3 for how much I actually felt affected (I would put Gene Kelly at #2. I loved that guy).

(is it tasteless to rate things like that?)

Oh and George Harrison. I was surprised at the shock when he died... So I guess Heath Ledger is #4.

One time he and another actor were shooting a complex scene. We had two days to shoot it, and at the end of the first day, they'd really found something and Heath was worried that he might not have it if we stopped. He wanted to carry on and finish. It's tough to ask the crew to work late when we all know there's plenty of time to finish the next day. But everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared. Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance to create that they'd given him.

Now that's something you don't hear about very often. He was a class act. :monkey2

There's another famous death which did let me feel like this.... a young, very talented Italian singer, Alex Baroni who had a deathly accident with his motorcycle. Really touched me like Heath's death.

Unforunately I doubt it. I was channel surfing yesterday and saw a Geraldo special in front of Heath's apartment with the tagline "Heath's Deadly Medical Cocktail!" He was speaking to someone and before he even spoke he caviated their conversation with "Now let me point out that his toxicalogy reports aren't out yet but...." I changed the channel in disguist.

Once his reports are made known many of those outlets whom are badmouthing him will shrug their shoulders and move forward...

Geraldo is a douche! I remember when he got his nose busted, that was hilarious.

It's great to hear that anecdote from Nolan. Very cool, and Ledger sounds like someone who was really great to work with - a true workaholic, but passionate in a way that inspired everyone else to do the best they could right along with him.

Out of all the young celebrities in the world, it's definitely sad that Heath was the one who had to go... I've loved him since A Knight's Tale (which I, unabashadly, have a great fondness for - Wash is in it, and so is Paul Bettany, who I love... and of course a very cute Heath Ledger). And I LOVED loved loved him in Brokeback Mountain - a simple, quiet, beautiful love story. I'll miss seeing him on the big screen for sure.

On another note, I was watching The Lookout the other night, and was struck by how much Joseph Gordon-Levitt reminds me of Ledger. Very similar bone structure and facial expressions. And he's a brilliant actor - loved him in Brick. The Lookout is not that great, but it was interesting and worth watching. It was just spooky how much he immediately reminded me of Heath.

Boy, they do look like they could be related. I really liked Joseph in Brick, haven't seen The Lookout yet but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Yeah, he does look like a dorkier version of Heath Ledger.

He could stand to pack on 15-20 lbs or so.

Unfortunately for him he's apparently about to be announced as Cobra Commander in what will eventually be one of the worst big-budget movies since Batman and Robin.

Jan 29 2008 Tom Cruise duped by Heath Ledger's dad impostor

An impostor claiming to be Heath Ledger’s father Kim Ledger was receiving emotional support over the phone from Tom Cruise. The con man also attempted to milk John Travolta for plane tickets to New York and had the funeral home where Heath’s body was being kept book him rooms at the Carlyle Hotel, according to the New York Post:

Over the next few days, he "had had a couple of conversations with" Cruise, asking for emotional support, said the source. But Cruise abruptly cut him off when he learned "he was an impostor," the source said. "Heath's reps found out there was this hoaxer and they called various celebs." Sources close to Cruise confirmed the impostor contacted him.

UN.FREAKING.BELIEVABLE.....
