EW Exclusive: Bryan Fuller's Rx for 'Heroes'
Dec 10, 2008, 06:17 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Pushing Daisies fans will probably take a hit out on me for saying this, but something good has come out of the comedy's untimely death: It's freed up Bryan Fuller to rescue Heroes from the villain known as "What the Frak Have They Done to a Once-Great Show?!" In his first interview since rejoining the series as a consultant, the writer-producer-genius behind such acclaimed season 1 hours as "Company Man" reveals where it all went wrong, what it'll take to make it right, and who's gonna have to be sacrificed before that can happen.

EW: Where did Heroes go wrong, in your opinion?

BRYAN FULLER: It became too dense and fell into certain sci-fi trappings. For instance, in the “Villains” arc, when you talk about formulas and catalysts, it takes the face off the drama. And I think the goal for everybody is to put a face back on the drama. You have to save something with a face; otherwise you don’t understand what you’re caring about. I thought the "Villains" arc started out very interestingly, and then became sort of muddy and dense and I couldn't get my hooks into the characters to understand their motivations. I also started to feel confused about what people's abilities were. One of the great things about the first season is that the metaphor for their abilities was very clear. Those metaphors seem to have gotten complicated in the past two seasons. I share that concern with everybody on the writing staff. It's not like I'm coming in and saying, "This is what you need to do to fix it!" Everybody knows what needs to be fixed and everybody is sort of rowing in that direction.

Your work starts with episode 19, yes?

Yes. I'm fortunate to be coming into a very exciting story line. [Former co-exec producers] Jeph [Loeb] and Jesse [Alexander], before they left the show, set so many great events in motion with the "Fugitives" arc [kicking off Feb. 2]. It really is a fresh start. All of the characters are back in their real lives. You see Peter as a paramedic. Claire is looking for colleges. We get away from the world of formulas and quasi-magic.

Are the "Fugitives" episodes leading up to 19 solid?

Yes. Episodes 14, 15 and 16 are amazing. The whole "Fugitives" arc starts out very strongly, and then it gets a little dense in the middle in terms of the mythology. So I came in right at the point where everybody was realizing, "Oh, we're getting too dense here and we need to put faces on stories because there is no face to a formula; there is no face to saving the world." So it's turning this big ship back into a character stream, and everyone on the writing staff shares that desire. We need to get back into a character place, because that's where this story started: Very clean, superhero metaphors to everyday life. That's the path that we're taking. But it is a big ship so it's going to take a little while to turn it.

Any plans to trim the sprawling cast?

People will die. And some will return. Matt’s wife [Janice] comes back. We’ll find out what happens when you have a superbaby. We're also going to tell fewer stories per episode. We're going to limit it to three or four with one big one that you can wrap the stories around. We're altering the structure of the show so that there's a very clear A story that takes up a larger percentage of the show so that that story gets traction.

Are you looking at Season 4 as a complete reboot of the series?

It's not necessarily a reboot as much as it is going back to the basic spirit of the show and pulling people back in. I don't think the issues with the show have been about the serialization as much as about the density of the stories that have been serialized.

Will you be part of the show next season [Season 4]?

That's the idea.

All of the characters are back in their real lives. You see Peter as a paramedic. Claire is looking for colleges. We get away from the world of formulas and quasi-magic.

That sounds encouraging.

It's no spoiler that Claire and Peter live. They (along with Hiro) are basically the core characters on the show. They'll be there as long as the show is on the air or until the actors decide to leave.

I would say that Claire, Peter and Hiro are the Top Tier characters. Everyone else would fall into the "B" Lists despite Sylar being my favorite character. I would say those are the only ones that are "deathproof".

As for the mid-season finale...I haven't got a chance to watch it so I can't comment but it sounds interesting...

I completely agree

This wasn't the finale. There are 13 episodes in Volume 3 and the finale, called "Duel", airs this coming Monday (12/15).

Great news!!
I think these characters are very rich, so I hope they fix this and have more showdowns and day to day hero stuff, instead of the intricate plotting vs. the companies and stuff...

Ah....this waiting for the HD versions on Netflix always throws me off on Monday nights.

I think Parkman and HRG are indespensible. On a personal choice Hiro is a lot less interesting without Ando, so I would definately keep that character.

Momma Petrelli is the easiest one to kill off for me.

One could have claimed that back in Season 1, Isaac Mendez was untouchable as needed as he was but the writers made it possible to kill him off and keep the importance of his character trait. Everyone "B" character has that same capability especially with Peter's ability or even Sylar's.

Parkman I think has been written to be despensible, throughout this season it felt almost as if the writers were striving for something for him to do. If he were killed off, I don't think you'd get much outcry as you would have say in Season 2.

As for HRG, he also is a template, what the Company's men should be like, we saw a bit of it in Eric Roberts in Season 1 and definitely more of it in the flashbacks from Season 3. I think what they've turned HRG into is an archetype that can be replaced, even Claire seems to be stressing to have usage not to mention the lame ducks the entire Bennet clan has really turned out to be as supporting characters. You'd get more people upset if HRG was gone but Season 3 made him more personable which break from the character of him doing what he has to regardless of connection. It was that I'm not doing the job but I am the job kind of attitude that people found interesting especially considering that one day he might have to go after Claire. Now that the climatic part of that has come and gone since Noah is really a rogue freelancer more than anything else because even when he is part of Primatech he is still apt to do what he wants makes him break from that mold. He is safer than Parkman without a doubt but not untouchable since another agent from Primatech could fill the role itself quite easily.

Ando on the other hand I would argue right now is more interesting that Hiro. That is the fault of bad writing though, if Ando were to die it'd just give Hiro another reason to fight and be memoralized more than anything else and be moved on.

Angela seems to have been attempted to become an Anti-Hero but quite weakly as she isn't used to her whole capacity....another casuality of bad writing.

Actually, I'd like Suresh and the Ali Larter characters to go before any others from the original cast.

Tracy Strauss is definitely a missed opportunity. As cold and calucating as she was in her introduction and the definite anger and identity quest you'd expect her to go on after finding out she was generically altered and she has one still suriviving triplet sister out there, she could have been made more of a dynamic character than even Niki is Season 1 but again the writers threw it away quite easy.

Suresh is a cluster^^^^ and was less needed in Season 2, losing the mythos that surrounded his character especially with his father being the one to "Crack the Code" outside of the company and with the Season 3 hysterical turns, they've ultimately eliminated the groundbreaking side of Chandra Suresh's findings since Primatech and Pinehurst already knew of it and Mohinder himself has become a bad Saturday Morning cartoon villian. He over anyone else was a screwed up character that needs to be written off. I'd rather another Indian actor be brought in as a brother following the footsteps of his father and brother who seem to have gone to America only to disappear and continue the research then endure more of Mohinder's lame storyline.

I thought Peter was a nurse, not a paramedic.....?

Most, not all, but most Nurses, Doctors go through EMT training which leads into Paramedics naturally.....Even Firefighters go through EMT. After that training and counting his medical experience the move to Paramedic isn't too far fetched.

Why do all the season finales of this show leave a lot to be desired to me? Feels like it was just another filler episode instead of a finale. Chalk season 3 up as another failure to go with season 2 for me.

Well Nash, mainly cause it wasn't the season finale. There are still a bunch of episode left starting February 2.

Wow,
maybe it's just me, but I thought last nigh episode was brilliant!!
Sylar playing ala Saw, was awesome!! I knew Claire's mom was going to be killed,
and Nathan vs. Peter was pretty good, reminded me of Season 1 a lot!!
The Ando bits were funny as hell!! Great job!!
And getting Hiro back was great to, if a little "rushed" (pun intended)
My only complain is Mohinder... I thought he was going to die for sure...
