Speaking as a lifelong geek, I remember how I reacted to films and stories as a child compared to now and they don't really map to each other, nor should they.
More representation for children to relate to -- or not -- is always a good thing. They like it or they don't for all kinds of reasons, but I'm not going to argue against a diverse media landscape. Every now and then these days, that diversity is treated with a heavy hand, but that's an over-correction due to a long-standing power imbalance and will even out eventually. For everything heavy-handed we have other stuff that makes perfect sense and is done well.
As for an outspoken female being less palatable to a certain segment than a more taciturn one, there is definitely that aspect to it. Of course someone like Larson will be more provocative to the insecure and the bigoted. But there is also the Tywin Lannister quote: "Any man who must say I am the king is no true king."
Quiet, effortless power is very appealing and can speak volumes. But just as you have quietly confident male characters alongside cocky, mouthy male characters -- so it goes for females. You can be annoyed by one without being insecure or having an agenda, or you can accept them both. It's not always an either-or situation.
Note that the lines are easily blurred in the conversation above. Are we talking about Captain Marvel or are we talking about Brie Larson?
I don't put much stock in what *most* actors say. Just because you're really good at your trade doesn't mean your opinion on various issues is well-considered, informed or nuanced. Plenty of actors of all genders are blithering idiots.
My barista at the local café may or may not have an insightful grasp on the issues of the day, but she can sling espressos like nobody's business. Sure, everyone's got an opinion.
-- It's just that celebrities have a platform that my barista does not.
I think Larson the actor has been taken out of context and blown out of proportion for the most part, but I also think she has a tendency to run her mouth like -- I don't know -- almost EVERY ACTOR EVER.
The film was okay, but fell short in many ways. They may figure out what to do with her character down the road. The rest of it is just noise to me.
