Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

The announcement is good enough for me...now you know it's coming for sure. Just enjoy the ride! :)

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Well, fortunately, these figures will be business as usual for Hot Toys, it won't be something like Spider-man where new ideas are put into place, they've done 4 Batmans now, providing they've resolved the issues that led to the DX problems, Batman should be straight forward for them and Joker even easier.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Ah, but HT ain't one to rest on its laurels. I would just as soon expect something new and revolutionary as a simple continuation of the previous rubber suits. Hopefully this one won't leak, anyway.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Maul and I have the same train of thought. I'm thinking most of the R&D is done with a figure like 89 Bats. The trickiest part is going to be finding a decent cape material but I think HT will be able to top any custom out there in that area and more.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

You know, I think experimenting is where they got in trouble in the first place. maybe the detailing on the first TDK Batman wasn't too good, but it didn't leak or deteriorate, same for the OC figure. The Keaton suit is OC basic, so hopefully they'll go with a simple route. I personally would like them to do it like the OC figure suit construction and just use some sculpting to fake the layered build of the actual film suit, just for the integrity of the figure. After the DX mess, I'm not all pumped that HT will roll out a Batman and have it go smoothly. The good news is, because of that mess, and because of the potential money they'll be looking for from TDKR, there's a lot of pressure on them to redeem themselves with collectors as a reliable maker of Batman figures so there's a good chance Keaton Batman will come out without issue because they need to get people back on their side before TDKR.

It really benefits us in a lot of ways to have this license be taken on in between film releases from a really hyped franchise.

Yeah, I'm really curious on how they're going to go about the scalloped cowl.

Will the cape go under it or will it be apart of the cape like in the film?

In this picture, you can see it folded over his shoulders,

In this one it's under the scalloped part of the cowl,

That head is going to take some unique engineering skills which ever way they pursue it.

Personally, I'd prefer an articulated neck, similar to the Takara only with a well hidden seam. I know in the film he has limited to no neck movement but it would be nice so that the bottom portion of the cowl (with the scallops) is soft to move along with the cape while the actual headsculpt is the hard plastic they use for their portraits.

If the head is one piece, ala TDK OC Batman, the scallops would have to be too. So then you'd have limited cape movement as the cowl would hinder it.

What I think will be even trickier than the material is the cut and sew. While some were never happy with the thickness of the HT capes on the Bale Bats, I personally had more issue with the pattern they were cut too, like how the OC cape wasn't really made to wrap around and drape over his front as it should have.

An issue I find with the cape on my Sovereing Bat is there's too much cloth, I can make his front look good but then the back has all sorts of awkward folds to tuck in the excess material.

1/6 capes are no easy task and when done right should really be applauded. Batman, Darth Vader, these capes have signature looks to them and they seem very difficult to capture.

I'm thinking the head'll be like the customs and the OC figure, just one solid piece with no articulation. Keaton had no range of movement and HT seems to focus on giving articulation used in the movies, they didn't add posability that wasn't there on the OC.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

All I can say is that I can't wait for these fig's to come out..that will be awesome !!! No more orders until Christopher Reeves and Keaton Batman comes out .

Yeah and I'm all for that, but then how do you create this if the head is all one piece and the cape is tucked under the cowl?

Design wise, everything is fine until you get to the cape and head.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Yeah, the cape and the cowl as well may pose some unique challenges.
I'm all for the cowl being cast as a single piece, no neck articulation, to keep the look and poseablity of the figure accurate.
The cape is actually 7 different panels sewn together. If they approach it that way they should get an accurate drap as long as the material is thin enough,

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Well, based on the OC and TDK Bat figures, I doubt you'll achieve that anyway. Because of the rubber suits, you can't really elevate the arms much and what you can, I don't think would be affected by the one piece cowl.

The only way to get that sort of posability is to do like Sovereign and use cloth for the main suit piece and put rubber armor plates on it, but, that's not how the film suit was so HT won't do that. The film suit was layers but not cloth.

I'd be really surprised if an HT Keaton Batman were able to achieve the wing spread poses from the film.

I'd rather see them just make it a sturdy figure and look it's best in standing poses and not worry about articulation too much.

I'd probably go for something like this, though maybe have the Batarang in his hand like he's going to throw it. Glad I cancelled my order for the statue too, the figure will be better.

Re: HT Batman 1989 Coming

Yeah I wouldn't dare try to achieve that pose with my OC or DX TDK Batman figures but they never really did that so the temptation to try it was never there.

With this Batman though, it's going to be hard to not want to try it considering he did it quite a bit in both films.

I guess a happy medium would be the arms just being horizontal and not as far upwards and extreme as that pic I posted. I would imagine it would be able to that like the Kenner Shadow Wing Batman.

....he looks incredibly dorky in that pic imo...
