Thats the thing I can't stand about the new Batman films. Even just looking at that dio, you can feel the grungy 89 look and feel. Pipes, huge pipes, that industrial look. It has something legendary to it. Yet at the same time really dark but that grungy dirty darkness to it. Modern Nolan films just feel like a dark city. No atmosphere. No grungy feel, no dark bizzare feeling, no history it's just a made up history. It doesn't feel dated.
Everything about the 89 film feels like it has aged naturally. Not made to look it's old yet you still know it's new. There's just no dark cautious feel to Nolan's. To some degree the 89 film in a way makes me think of a similar feel to Robocop for Detroit for the Steel Mill. You just know it's a bad place to be. You can almost feel the filth of the place. How it's been allowed to deteriorate. Thats the thing I love about Burton's films. It just feels so curiously darkly. That there's more hidden away but you don't know what it is.
