aha! cool you bring that out!
Now we can begin with ruling out some of the many misconceptions!
About batman killing, its seems (I am no real batman fan, but I did some research of my own now) that Batman DID kill in the beginning days
So there goes one misconception about a batman that never killed
on purpose
If you want details about his killing history (he even used a GUN!!!) and how that changed in some point, you can read it all here:

Lol Batman even hanged a guy with a rope! on purpose! LOL
Things I want to share about Batman Returns to the Batman fanbase here that disapprove the movie, just read and weep

Here are some facts that will make so called "real batman fans and specialists" shiver down their spine I can imagine!
...since for many of the fans, Batman Returns is conceived as not being a Batman film because it is not true to the comics.
Well, no statement can be made further from the truth than that! I quote him:
There's also a common misconception that Batman Returns has little to do with the comic books, which is simply not true. It is removed no further than any other Batman movie when it comes to the villains and their origins than Batman Forever, Batman&Robin, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but more faithful in other areas: https://www.batmanmovieonline.com/features.php?display=58
FYI, the guy who owns this blog is a man that knows his Batman stuff, he is a walking encyclopedia if you ask me.
He compared and analised every batman movie since 1989 untill the last one, TDK, with the comics history in great detail, with pictures of the panels to prove it !
And to end with a personal favorite as a movie fan in general
Whether it is faithful or not is irrelevant. In the long run, I being faithful to comics has anything to do with a quality movie. Being faithful to the source and quality are two completely different things which do not affect each other. The great late Stanley Kubrick's The Shining had little to do with the actual book, yet it's a masterpiece. However at the time of the release it fell victim of this misguided criticism, just like Batman Returns
So here ya go, Batman Returns is a TRUE BATMAN MASTERPIECE that didn't deserve so many of the negative critics it had to deal at the time of its release and even today.
On the other hand, its also a fact that this movie has a special place among certain people and you could even talk about a cult following.
