Think about it like this: when you turned 4, a year was a 1/4 of your whole life; at 27, a year is a 1/27 of your whole life.
Since your experience of time is relative to how long you've lived, each year is a smaller portion of the whole.
By the time you're in your 60's they'll be clicking past like hours...in your 70's, they're like minutes...in your 80's...
Makes sense. Your whole life is your perception of a "full" time.
Reminds me of Thranduil's line about how a hundred years is a mere blink to him.
